Mister Underdog - Blackmagic

IL Magia nera URSA Broadcast and Studio cameras, and ATEM switchers, shape the Mister Underdog show, broadcast on YouTube.

Patton, a Madrid-based production company specialising in webcasting and live production, produces the show twice a week in front of a small audience at the Teatro Luchana. The show provides football fans in Spain with news and observations on national and international matches. Broadcast via Youtube, it has accumulated more than 12 million views in the first year.

IL Mister Underdog shows are captured for posterity by two Trasmissione dell'URSA units mounted on cranes and three Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro cameras exclusively for the panelists’ shots. These cameras also use different lenses, such as the Panasonic Lumix 14-140mm and 44-175mm. These signals are mixed on an ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K with an ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel device, and the main signal is then sent to YouTube via vMix.

Miguel Patón, Patton’s general director, was looking for a camera that was “light and compact” that didn’t interfere with the audience’s experience. As a result, he chose Blackmagic solutions: “Having already worked with Blackmagic Design’s cameras in the live event world, we believed the Studio Camera 4K Pros would give us the versatility needed to create high quality 4K content for streaming. The size and brightness of the screen make a big difference to our operators given the venue’s low light conditions, as well as the intuitive controls, which are ideal for meeting the challenges of small live productions.”

Paton believes that the use of Blackmagic solutions has been key to the success of Mister Underdog: “It’s been impressive witnessing the amount of streaming content that has emerged during the pandemic. But more importantly, the quality and cost of production equipment from manufacturers like Blackmagic Design mean this programing continues to carve out its own space even as restrictions ease.”
