EVS NFR2000 - Neuron Compress

Photron, an ЕВС specialist partner in Japan, has provided a major Japanese operator with several EVS Neuron Compress solutions for its JPEG XS workflows.

This agreement follows a series of proof-of-concepts (PoC) held in 2021, where Photron и ЕВС were able to demonstrate the potential of EVS Neuron Compress by conducting multiple workflow integration trials in Japan. With a compression ratio of up to 12:1, the JPEG-XS codec is being used for live productions over local and wide area networks (LAN and WAN). The latest version of Neuron enables “lossless, low latency” multi-channel JPEG XS compression.

Neuron Compress is the latest product line available within EVS Neuron, EVS’ multifunctional processing platform. Known in the industry as the “modular glue” for IP infrastructures (according to EVS itself), it can perform multiple real-time processing tasks required by a broadcaster. Neuron Compress can be enhanced with an SDI I/O module, enabling the integration of video processing over IP networks with existing SDI baseband operations, also acting as a bridge or gateway.

Naoma Yoshimi, marketing and sales team leader for Photron’s video solutions business unit, details how they decided on the EVS solution to address their customer’s JPEG XS compression needs: “We were looking for a JPEG XS compression solution that would allow our customers to better handle their media processing needs and that would give them the proper foundations to grow into full IP infrastructures. We selected EVS’ Neuron Compress as we were impressed with the outstanding density and low latency measurements as well as the high potential it demonstrated during our initial assessments.”

Meanwhile, Jean-Pierre Nouws, solutions director at EVS, welcomes the partnership with Photron and Japanese broadcast: “While the PoC version of EVS Neuron Compress can already encode 4 and decode 4 full HD channels – and vice versa- simultaneously, the product’s roadmap shows we plan to triple number of encoders and decoders as well as enable the support of UHD streams in the near future. We are looking forward to continuing our strong partnership with Photron, helping them build innovative media infrastructures that support their customers’ needs as IP environments continue to gain pace across the region.”
