Blackmagic - Breadbin Productions - Ultimatte 12

The Schwarze Magie Ultimatte 12 HD compositor and URSA Mini Pro 12K OLPF camera form the workflow with which Breadbin Productions is leveraging the capabilities of its chroma keyers to achieve productions with a high sense of realism and immersion.

Breadbin Production, which specializes in broadcasting events related to the corporate world, focuses its production on green screen. It’s a thoughtful decision, but it brings significant challenges as Gareth Norman, its creative director, explains: “Virtual production is not a one size fits all solution and requires careful research to ensure the harmonious integration of various technologies.”

Blackmagic - Breadbin Productions - Ultimatte 12Norman and his team have spent months studying the technology available on the market. Finally, he has found a workflow that allows him to give wings to all the creative possibilities that his day-to-day work demands. This is led by the URSA Mini Pro 12K OLPF camera, whose key features include sync generation (“Synchronization minimizes artifacts and screen tearing, ensuring a smooth workflow”). Another key element for this workflow is the DeckLink 8K Pro capture card, which is used to transfer data from the camera to Unreal Engine and optimize synchronization (“The addition of the Ultimatte has further streamlined our green screen compositing pipeline”)

These elements are then sent to an ATEM Mini Extreme ISO mixer to alternate camera signals for recording. Sending the images to a physical compositor in real time has allowed Breadbin Productions to adjust the camera and Unreal Engine signals separately, and thus achieve better quality when broadcasting live. All of this, coupled with the addition of Ultimatte 12, has improved the company’s current workflow: “The Ultimatte delivers incredible results in keying while simultaneously maintaining individual strands of hair, shadow detail, and transparent objects like water glasses. The image fidelity is made even more impressive by the fact that the keying is less prone to removing other colors from the image, such as yellows and gold,” explains Norman.

The production of the Annual Technical Teachers’ Conference

Breadbin Productions was responsible for the broadcast of the Annual Technical Teachers Conference, which involved producing a six-hour live event with two panel discussions and presentations from nine speakers located at ten different sites. In order to create a more dynamic and engaging set, each speaker spoke in front of a backdrop alluding to their topic. Breadbin had the ability to switch between contexts and incorporate a radical lighting change in a matter of seconds using a DMX lighting desk Und pre-programmed environments.

Garon Campbell, owner of Breadbin Productions, explains how the production unfolded: “One speaker discussed cyber initiatives, while another discussed solar panels and harnessing wind energy. The specificity needed here allowed us to enhance the live storytelling by emulating ten different worlds, each considerably different from the last, filming complex interiors and vast exteriors while everyone was essentially presenting from our green screen studio.”
