In an industry where technical precision and creativity must coexist in a constant balance, Picnic has managed to establish itself as one of Spain’s most robust post-production studios in a surprisingly short space of time. With a frenetic workload for national and international platforms, storage management was key; therefore, after evaluating various options, the studio chose StorNext, Quantum’s collaborative file system.

David González LozanoFounded in 2020 as a result of the merger of three companies specialising in sound, image and visual effects, Picnic has managed to anticipate the needs of an industry undergoing rapid transformation. David González Lozano, Image Work Supervisor & Co-founder at Picnic, explains that the project’s origins were shaped by a structural shift in the audiovisual market: “We saw that many OTT platforms were starting to produce content in Spain, such as Netflix, Amazon and Disney. They needed a different kind of service that we weren’t offering at the time.”

This context, coupled with the impact of productions such as Money Heist, drove the creation of a studio equipped to handle larger-scale and more complex projects. Picnic began with a modest infrastructure comprising two visual effects suites and two sound suites, but one designed from the outset with a vision for growth. Five years on, the studio has over 30 professionals working across different shifts and a dozen operational suites connected to a shared storage system.

PicnicHowever, rapid growth brought with it technical challenges. The initial infrastructure soon began to show its limitations, particularly in terms of performance and scalability. The lack of support for the previous system and the inability to extend licences led to bottlenecks that directly affected the workflow.

“We started seeing colourists leaving the suite and asking others if they were performing resource-intensive tasks because they couldn’t play back the material on the system,” recalls González. This was a particularly delicate situation when clients are present and delivery times are critical.

Reliability, stability and experience

After evaluating various options (including high-capacity NAS systems and different network configurations), the studio opted for StorNext, Quantum’s collaborative file system. The choice was no accident. Reliability, stability and previous experience with this technology were decisive factors. The implementation took less than a week and caused minimal disruption to operations, allowing for a smooth transition for the team.

PicnicSince then, the benefits have been clear. The system allows simultaneous work on multiple processes (colour grading, editing, visual effects rendering) without compromising performance. Furthermore, it has significantly reduced operational incidents et improved the experience for both technicians and clients.

Beyond performance, the new infrastructure has also provided advanced management tools. The ability to forecast storage usage in the medium term enables more efficient planning et more strategic decision-making.

PicnicWith a solid technological foundation, Picnic now looks to the future with a clear roadmap: to expand its capacity with nearline storage and long-term archiving solutions using LTO libraries. All this with a well-defined objective: to free the team from technical concerns so they can focus on what truly matters.

In an industry where speed and quality are non-negotiable, Picnic demonstrates that technological innovation is not merely a support, but a key driver of creativity. “I believe we must use technology in a way that gives us more time to make creative decisions and set the technical side aside for a while,” concludes González Lozano.
