Falcon 9

Los satélites SES-18 y SES-19, diseñados y ensamblados por Northrop Grumman, fueron lanzados con éxito por el cohete Falcon 9 de SpaceX desde la Estación Espacial de Cabo Cañaveral en Florida (Estados Unidos) a las 19:38 hora local del viernes 17 de marzo.

Los dos satélites de fabricación estadounidense son el cuarto y quinto (y último) satélite que se lanzarán como parte del plan de transición a la banda C de SES, tras el lanzamiento de SES-22 en junio de 2022 y el lanzamiento en tándem de SES-20 y SES-21 en octubre de 2022.

Estos satélites son partes esenciales del plan de SES para lograr que el programa de la Comisión Federal de Comunicaciones (FCC) despeje el espectro de la banda C para permitir a los operadores inalámbricos desplegar servicios 5G en todo el territorio contiguo de Estados Unidos (CONUS), al tiempo que garantiza que los clientes actuales de SES sigan disfrutando de servicios ininterrumpidos de televisión, radio y transmisión de datos críticos a millones de estadounidenses.

Desde 2020, SES, junto con otros operadores de satélites, ha estado despejando 300 MHz de espectro de banda C y realizando la transición de los servicios de los clientes a los 200 MHz de espectro restantes asignados mediante el lanzamiento de nuevos satélites, la construcción de nuevas estaciones terrenas y el envío de cientos de técnicos de estaciones terrenas de satélites por todo el país para instalar nuevos filtros en las antenas de los clientes.

Al proporcionar protecciones contractuales de servicio a los clientes que reciben servicios de vídeo en Estados Unidos, SES-18 y SES-19 permitirán a SES despejar de forma segura el espectro de banda C para ayudar a cumplir los ambiciosos objetivos de la FCC para la innovación 5G estadounidense. Se espera que SES-18 comience a operar en junio de 2023 a 103 grados Oeste sustituyendo a la carga útil de banda C de SES-3 y SES-19 se coubicará con SES-22 a 135 grados Oeste.
