Spanish Radio Television and the Carlos III University renew the RTVE Chair

The corporate general director of RTVE, Federico Montero, and the rector of UC3M, Juan Romo, sign the renewal agreement.

The Research chair between Spanish Radio Television (RTVE) and the Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M) It was established in October 2015 as a collaborative initiative between an interdisciplinary group of RTVE professionals and the research group Knowledge Reusing of the UC3M to promote training, research, study and dissemination activities in the area of ​​Information and Communications Technologies related to information management, big data, linked data, and its application to the audiovisual field.

Three years later, Federico Montero, corporate general director of RTVE, and Juan Romo, rector of the UC3M, have signed the renewal of this Chair.

This collaboration has been reflected in the development of R&D&I activities and, specifically, in the design and implementation of the SMART platform (Network Monitoring and Alerting System for Spanish Radio Television). This platform allows the continuous capture of data from the main social networks and digital media, also integrating information from RTVE's own sources.

Plataforma SMART

The plataforma SMART and support for multidimensional analysis from a set of more than 90 indicators of interest, grouped into “Notoriety”, “Credibility”, “Controversy”, “Attractiveness”, “Image” and “Themes”. This serves to better understand the behavior of an entity of interest, such as a media outlet, as well as to describe the online communities created around it.

In this way, it has been possible to implement a big data management strategy as a support mechanism for the decision-making of RTVE's audience analysis team. Although this type of approach has been carried out in other contexts, this is the first solution for the media sector that brings together the processing of big data and its analysis with various techniques on a single platform.

The collaboration established between RTVE and UC3M through the Chair has also served to create an environment of agile and multidisciplinary cooperation, promoting the achievement of business objectives through the transfer of technology and knowledge. In addition, it has served as a training environment for carrying out academic work and scientific dissemination activities.

This collaboration is consolidated through the renewal of the Chair as a strategic action for both RTVE and UC3M. The new objectives are framed in the deepening of intelligent analysis of big data for audience prediction and content impact. The results of this challenge are reflected in a better knowledge of the audiovisual business, serving as a key element to improve RTVE's public content service and promoting research and innovation in key knowledge areas, such as machine learning, big data, cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
