‘Agora’ in the US by Newmarket
‘Ágora’ will arrive at the United States cinemas next year by the hand of Newmarket, Distributor of films such as ‘The Passion of Christ’ and, in January 2010, ‘Creation’. With almost 3.2 million viewers and a collection close to 20 million euros, “Ágora” is currently the most watched film of the year in Spain, only surpassed by ‘Up’ and ‘Ice Age 3’.
Agora It will arrive at the United States cinemas next year, by the hand of Newmarket Film, after the distribution agreement reached with the producers of Alejandro Amenábar's film -the Cinema, Mod Producciones and hymenopter, with the participation of Canal+.
Newmarket Film has distributed films with religious themes in the past, such as The Passion of Christ, by Mel Gibson. Newmarket has recently acquired Jon Amiel's new movie, Creation, starring Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany and will be released in the US in January 2010.
Chris Ball, co -founder of Newmarket, said that "Alejandro Amenábar has created a film that not only offers us a visual show, but also portrays religious intolerance in a way that gives the film a high degree of relevance and modernity, although it is set centuries ago." Ball has added that "we are proud to be the only ones to show this tape to the American public, which will discover that the film in the end becomes an epic story."
For his part Ghislain Barrois, CEO of Telecinco Cinema, has been satisfied with this agreement stating that "Agora I couldn't be better and more competent hands. ”
3.2 million viewers
Almost 3.2 million viewers have gone to Spanish rooms until last Friday to see Agora, a figure that makes it the most watched Spanish film of the year. In addition, with a box office collection of almost 19.5 million euros, it is currently the third tape with the highest collection in our country, only surpassed by Up and Ice Age 3.
The film tells the epic struggle of the astronomer Hipatia for saving the wisdom of the ancient world with its disciples in an emblematic place for universal knowledge, the city of Alexandria, at a crucial moment in the history of mankind: the unstoppable ascent of Christianity. Alejandro Amenábar's fifth film is starring Rachel Weisz (Oscar by the faithful gardener). Together with the actress, the film has a solid cast in which actors such as Max Minghella (Syriana), Oscar Isaac (lies network), Rupert Evans (Hellboy), Ashraf Barhom (The Kingdom), Sami Samir (Nativity) and the veteran French actor Michael Lonsdale (Munich).
