YouTube continues testing with the broadcast of live events
Following the experiences of live concerts by Alicia Keys and U2, the Google-owned video channel has closed an agreement with the Board of Control for Cricket to broadcast 60 Indian Premier League cricket matches.
Although for now on an experimental basis, and after the success of experiences such as the live broadcast of Alicia Keys and U2 concerts last year, YouTube is now entering, although still discreetly, into the live sports rights market. The Google-owned online video channel has signed an agreement with the Board of Control for Cricket to broadcast 60 Indian Premier League cricket matches.
Although worldwide, with exceptions in territories such as the United Kingdom, India or Australia, cricket is a very minority sport, this agreement will be a new laboratory for YouTube in its intention to become a 'broadcaster' with live content broadcast with global and local sponsors. On this occasion, advertising revenue will be shared between the Indian Cricket League and YouTube itself.
