Rode has launched the new VideoMic HD, a high-fidelity, precision RF shotgun microphone with integrated digital recording, designed for large-sensor DSLR cameras and camcorders.

Thinking of DSLR cameras and camcorders with large sensors, Rode has just launched the new Videomic HD, a high-fidelity, precision RF shotgun microphone with integrated digital recording.

VideoMic HD has inherited its audio DNA from the NTG3 professional shotgun microphone. Sharing much of the electronic design and incorporating the same capsule as the NTG3, the VideoMic HD is a true super-cardioid condenser shotgun microphone with RF polarization technology virtually immune to the interference and condensation that leads other microphones to failure.

Continuing its history of innovation, Rode has incorporated a high-quality digital recorder into the body of the VideoMic HD microphone. This completely eliminates the need for a separate audio recorder while still providing an audio signal to the camera for a superior reference audio track.

File storage is done using a microSD card and access to files and possible software updates is done through a microUSB port.

An integrated headphone system with level control allows users to monitor their recording in real time, while a high-contrast LCD display on the back of the microphone provides visual metering as well as basic recording control.

Configuration

Audio capture and output can be configured in multiple ways thanks to the innovative microphone output selection. In its default mode, the VideoMic HD microphone's audio is recorded and output as a dual mono signal.

When in “security recording” mode, the microphone picks up and sends the standard audio signal on the right channel and a -20 dB attenuated signal on the left channel. In the event that an unexpected increase in the audio signal occurs, the user has a backup audio channel that can be referenced. The third signal setting allows for dual mono audio capture and balanced signal output using Rode's VXLR 3.5mm to XLR adapter.

VideoMic HD offers a 3.5mm mono line connection that supports plug-in power, allowing the connection of a secondary microphone, for example, a lavalier or headset. The fourth microphone output option allows you to route the line input to one of the stereo channels, both to the built-in recorder and to the 3.55mm output.

The microphone body is made of durable, lightweight die-cast aluminum and features a quick release lever for easy, secure mounting to any universal-sized camera mount.

Based on the design of the award-winning Rode Blimp, VideoMic HD features a unique windshield and suspension structure. The capsule and linear tube are completely suspended within the microphone, providing superior shock resistance and isolation from physical sound sources throughout the microphone body. The outer geodesic structure offers superior strength while offering additional wind protection through the foam windbreak. A DeadCat VMHD furry windscreen is supplied with the microphone to provide protection in high wind environments.
