The film's director and screenwriter Terry Gilliam, who has worked on the project since 1989, notes that "Don Quixote is a dreamer, an idealist and a romantic, determined not to accept the limitations of reality, moving forward regardless of setbacks, as we have done since the beginning of production. We have been working on this for so long that the idea of finishing shooting this "clandestine" film is quite surreal. Any sensible person would have given up years ago, but sometimes the Big-headed dreamers win in the end, so I thank all the idealists who have come together to make this dream come true.”
The Man Who Killed Don Quixote tells the story of an old man convinced that he is Don Quixote and who confuses Toby, an advertising executive, with his faithful squire, Sancho Panza. The couple embarks on a strange journey, jumping back and forth in time, between the current 21st century and the magical 17th century. Little by little Toby, like the infamous knight, becomes infected with that illusory world incapable of separating dream and reality. The story culminates in a ghostly and emotional ending where Toby takes over from Don Quixote de la Mancha.
The select cast has been put together by casting directors Irene Lamb and Camila Valentine Isola. Gilliam once again has the famous cinematographer Nicola Pecorini (Zero Theorem, The Imaginary of Doctor Parnassus, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) in this project.
