Coronavirus impact on cinema

The Ministry of Culture and Sports, through the Institute of the Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA), has called for aid for the distribution of feature films and sets of short films, with a provision of 2.5 million euros expandable, as published today by Official State Gazette (BOE). This is a new call for aid launched by the Ministry since the state of alarm was decreed and after the Royal Decree Law on support measures for the cultural sector to face the COVID-19 crisis.

These aids are aimed at independent distributors of Spanish, community and Latin American productions released between the last quarter of 2018 and the end of 2019.

The individual amount of aid will be able to cover up to 50% of distribution costs of the film, up to a maximum of 150,000 euros, such as: printing, subtitling, dubbing, advertising, promotion, measures against piracy and technical means and resources invested to guarantee the universal accessibility of the film for people with disabilities.

With these grants, the ICAA wants to support distribution carried out by independent distributors to offer citizens a heterogeneous and diverse panorama of European and Ibero-American production, with special attention to those that have stood out for their participation in festivals and obtaining awards, in addition to their cultural interest as an expression of cultural and human diversity.
