TVU One at the Ephemeral Film Festival

The technology of TVU Networks has helped launch the first global, virtual film festival. Held in Barcelona, the International Ephemeral Film Festival of Catalonia presented a series of fiction films broadcast live from its location, with simultaneous post-production. It was the first virtual exhibition of this method of live narration dubbed The ephemeral cinema by the creators Ephemeral Films.

Using a compact and mobile transmitter TVU One 4K, the movies were captured and streamed to viewers directly from their real-world location. According to the technology director of Efímero Films, Bernat Aragonés, the video quality, freedom of movement and connectivity provided by the TVU One transmitter enabled the production of these ephemeral films in a way that was previously impossible.

“The TVU Networks solution is at the center of the Cinema Ephemere concept,” highlights Aragonés. "With this form of cinema, narrative fiction is broadcast live from a real location. The complex camera movements and intricate choreography between actors and cameras in real locations would not be possible with traditional cabling and infrastructure. And the incorporation of new technologies such as 4K and HDR in TVU products further enhance the viewer experience with incredibly vibrant and detailed images."

All streaming, audio and video post-production, including color correction, titles and subtitles, was managed from one control room. Antaviana Films, a post-production and digital effects company based in Barcelona.

“Having a central control room along with our TVU One units meant we could go anywhere we wanted,” adds Aragonés. "We weren't tied to a mobile unit or the soundstage. We could shoot and move freely in the mountains, along a long shopping street or inside an industrial warehouse without any restrictions."

Multi-camera sync

The use of the mobile transmitter TV One assured the filmmakers a Fully wireless multi-camera sync and frame-accurate across all the festival's live productions, essential to the success of Cinema Ephemere. The unit, prepared for 5G, is the first cellular package solution with true 4K 50/60P 10-bit streaming. Incorporates H.265 encoding to deliver broadcast-quality HDR video at just 3Mbps using technology Inverse StatMux Plus patented by TVU.

Rafael Castillo, Vice President of Europe at TVU Networks, acknowledges that having "our TVU One at the center of the technologies deployed at the festival and empowering creators like those at Efimero Films is a tremendous honor. They have taken everything that makes TVU technology stand out - such as low latency, powerful connectivity and impeccable video quality - and applied it to an exciting new film genre. I can't wait to see what's next for Efimero Films and the Cinema Ephemere."
