Tulpa resolves budget constraints for new studio with Blackmagic
A selection of solutions Blackmagic Design have allowed the Italian production company Tulpa Studio create a new dynamic of broadcast-quality production “with cinematographic quality and without great expense.”
Michelangelo Ingrosso, founder of Tulpa Studio, set out to shape a new cooking program Sweet Home (Discovery) combining “the elegance of a high-end advertisement with the intimacy of a documentary series”, but without having to make a “huge” expense. "We wanted to give it a real cinematic feel. This meant deeper colors, shallow depth of field, and lighting more typical of a movie than a cooking show, but none of that would work if we couldn't maintain clarity. Viewers need to see exactly what the chef is doing," he explains.
After studying the market, he ended up deciding on cameras Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K y Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro. These solutions allowed him to establish a work dynamic based on the format Blackmagic RAW 12:1: “Even with eight cameras recording in 4K or 6K resolution, DaVinci Resolve's media management tools allowed us to control file sizes, reduce the amount of unnecessary material, and keep editing fluid.”
When it comes to mixing, Tulpa opted for the mixer ATEM Television Studio HD8 ISO, with which the team led by Ingrosso managed live switching between multiple cameras, recordings and timecode synchronization. Additionally, the production company benefited from the system's ability to export a project file from DaVinci Resolve (.DRP) immediately after recording: "By the end of a session, we could send a trailer to the distributor. That immediacy is invaluable when trying to keep up the pace in post-production."
Tulpa Studio's approach, Blackmagic itself emphasizes, serves as an example for others small and medium producers who face the challenge of "providing superior quality without incurring excessive infrastructure": "I don't mind sticking to a single brand. I'm interested in all the equipment working correctly and not slowing us down. From recording to editing and finishing, we work in an interconnected environment that allows us to save time, reduce risks and compete at the highest level."
