Odd Socks combines DJ sessions and a cinematic finish with the Blackmagic Pyxis 6K
A selection of cameras Blackmagic, among which the Pyxis 6K full-frame digital cinema model stands out, allow the New Zealand production company Odd Socks offer DJ sessions in natural locations in the country with a cinematic and immersive aesthetic.
Odd Socks Productions was founded by the director of photography Daryl Habraken and the producer Yvie Harvie-Salter. Through your brand Redlining and his YouTube channel, specializes in creation and distribution of musical and cultural content. Among them, a project born to provide more visibility to the field of electronic music in New Zealand stands out: DJ sessions filmed in stunning outdoor settings with a cinematic look. "We were inspired by international YouTube channels that show various DJs playing live in amazing settings, and realized that there was nothing like it that represented New Zealand. With the stunning landscapes and abundant talent we have in our country, it seemed completely logical to start doing something similar here," explains Habraken.
Most recent Odd Socks productions were filmed on Waiheke Island with four cameras; including a digital cinematographic unit Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, the new camera Pyxis 6K and the model Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. With the help of two fixed cameras, one mobile and a drone, the team captured different angles and panoramic shots of the artists and the environment.
The producer combined anamorphic lenses with certain cameras, in order to achieve panoramic images with a cinematic aesthetic that accentuated the beauty of the places. As Habraken explains: "One of the most notable features of the Blackmagic cameras was the ease of processing anamorphic images. Being able to modify the settings and view the image correctly and without compression in the camera really made a difference when composing outdoor shots."
DaVinci Resolve, part of the Odd Socks workflow
The dynamics of post-production was fully completed in DaVinci Resolve Studio. The Odd Socks team was able to take full advantage of the features of calibrations y multi-camera editing that the program offers: "We shot everything in Blackmagic RAW, which gave us full control over exposure and color in post-production. Even when shooting in natural light, which changes, the flexibility of DaVinci Resolve gave us the ability to balance everything perfectly."
The tool of multi-camera editing DaVinci Resolve Studio was especially valuable for this project, according to Habraken: “The ability to sync and edit multiple camera angles in a single timeline was a phenomenal change. We could switch between shots in real time and make adjustments on the fly, and this allowed us to focus on the energy of the presentation, rather than worrying about technical limitations.”
Looking ahead, Odd Socks Productions plans to continue expanding its musical content coverage through a collaboration with international DJs and partners in the field of tourism; all, with a view to publicizing both the artists and the diverse landscapes that New Zealand has to offer. “We are excited to push the boundaries of what can be achieved in the context of live music recording, and Blackmagic cameras will be essential in this process,” he concludes.
