Canon EOS C300 Mark III B Cine Prime FSLSeveral Canon cameras (EOS C70, C500 Mark II, C300 Mark III and R5) have received new updates.

The EOS C500 Mark II will now be able to record in 4:3 and 6:5 formats/resolution, provided the camera is set to Full Frame sensor mode in Cinema RAW Light. On the other hand, previously offering only 2x or 1.33x image decompression options, the EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III will now be able to have a 1.8x decompression option, allowing users to choose from a wider range of anamorphic lenses.

The upgrades to the EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III will also benefit those working in live production. Both cameras’ support for the IP-based XC Protocol enables their remote control through the use of Canon’s RC-IP100 remote camera controller. This feature also allows users to remotely control the camera’s zoom control, focus, iris diaphragm, gain adjustment and white balance, among other items.

The upgrade is designed for “seamless integration” of EOS Cinema cameras into live production workflows, along with Canon’s PTZ solutions.

In addition to the existing LUT viewing support, the EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III now support the Look File function. Look Files are 3D LUT files that can be imported into the camera for internal recording, providing accurate color/contrast characteristics without the need for color grading. Once the devices are updated, users of the EOS C500 Mark II, EOS C300 Mark III and EOS C70 will also see the addition of the ITU BT.709 Standard Gamma option, with the ‘BT.709 Standard‘ CP file assigned to the “Custom Picture Profile”.

Moreover, when shooting RAW at 5.9K or 4K/UHD internally, the output at 2K and FHD becomes 12G-SDI compatible, enabling greater compatibility with external HD monitors.

Canon EOS C70 FRT 04EOS C70: Full-area AF

Users upgrading the EOS C70 will find that full-area AF has been added to the current “Large/Small” frame size options, enabling users greater AF control over a larger area. Additionally, when using full-area AF mode, the “Touch Tracking” function can be activated by touching the LCD screen, as can “Face Detection” when touching the subject’s face.

Meanwhile, the EF-EOS R 0.71x mount adapter, when used with the EOS C70, will also expand its compatibility with up to seven new EF lenses, in addition to the three currently supported. Compatible lenses bring additional benefits, Canon notes, such as optical correction (aberration and peripheral illumination correction), auto iris (AE), autofocus (AF) performance and lens metadata (focal length and T/f number correction). Similarly, Canon has confirmed that a future update will allow additional lenses to be added to the list of devices compatible with this mount adapter.

EOS R5 and Compact-Servo

Finally, those using Canon’s EOS R5 on film productions will benefit from increased compatibility with cinema lenses. Canon’s Compact-Servo CN-E 18-80 mm and CN-E 70-200 mmii cinema lenses are now compatible with the EF-EOS R mount adapter, which will allow users to “achieve a cinematic look with high optical quality,” as well as optimized handling for video recording.

This new feature will allow EOS R5 users to control functions such as optical correction or lens metadata. In addition, it will support servo control, autofocus, auto exposure and Image Stabilization (IS) operation.
