Blackmagic - Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 - Brotherhood

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 enabled production services company Brotherhood Studios to shoot a set of holiday recipes for one of its major clients with confidence.

Brian Ulrich, director of the production, knew that realism and colour rendition were key to getting the food right. The Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2, shooting in Blackmagic RAW format, allowed him to achieve the fidelity he was looking for: “The color out of these cameras is amazing A lot of filmmakers focus on getting realistic skin tones, but with a lot of the product cinematography I’ve been doing lately it’s critical to accurately depict the food while still making it look tasty. In this case we were shooting salmon being prepared, and I was very impressed with the mouthwatering look of these finished, colored product images that we got from the Blackmagic cameras.”

Blackmagic - Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 - BrotherhoodUlrich and his team decided to adopt both Blackmagic cameras, not only for their performance, but also for their “efficiency and flexibility”: “Shooting in a tight kitchen set, we used our Pocket 4K as a static overhead and the Pocket 6K G2 as our main camera, getting all the detail and beauty shots. The Pocket 6K G2 also allowed us to be more comfortable shooting a little wider, knowing we could crop in if we wanted a slightly closer shot.” The project manager also highlights some of the specific features of the 6K G2 as key to the success of the shoot, including “a larger sensor, EF lens mount and 6K resolution”, as well as its “adjustable five-inch screen” and “neutral density filters”.

Blackmagic - Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 - BrotherhoodBoth the editing and colour grading of the parts was done with DaVinci Resolve, which helped to simplify the project workflow as well as streamline processes. Ulrich elaborates: “I first started using DaVinci Resolve just for color, but round tripping from other editing software was adding unnecessary steps. We decided to try editing our projects in Resolve as well, and we loved it! Blackmagic RAW works seamlessly in Resolve, handling the 4K and 6K footage easily, and keeps our workflow contained in one program, which has streamlined our post process.”

“I am consistently impressed and pleased with the functionality of a Blackmagic Design workflow, from cameras to Resolve,” concludes Ulrich.
