Eurosport an HD
Coinciding with the Roland Garros tournament, Eurosport today began its encrypted high definition broadcasts, although it will be open for now as a promotion, through Hispasat 1C, Hot Bird 7A, Thor 5 and Eurobird 9.
With DVB-S2 standard and MPEG-4 compression, the pan-European sports channel Eurosport has started broadcasting in high definition today. The Roland Garros tennis tournament being held these days will be the first regular broadcast on the new channel. Although the channel will be encrypted since it is distributed exclusively through payment platforms, for now it will broadcast free-to-air as a promotion.
Eurosport HD can be followed through the Portuguese platform Meo (Hispasat 1C), the Polish Cyfra+ (Hot Bird 7A), the Hungarian Hello HD (Eurobird 9), and the Scandinavian Digital Nordic (Thor 5). The encoding in most cases will be with Conax, although it will also use Mediaguard and Viaccess. Broadcasting in 16/9 format, Eurosport HD will only be available, for the moment, in English, French and German.
Eurosport is currently in negotiations with both Ono and Digital+ for the introduction of the new high definition version into the Spanish market.
