The private Portuguese channel installs its third multi-format console that will be used for the production of news and entertainment programs.

Kahuna, Snell, en TVI

The Portuguese channel TVI has standardized the Snell Kahuna multi-format mixer for its high-level self-produced programs. The new Kahuna will be used mainly for the production of entertainment and information programs, playing a prominent role in the launch of its new 24-hour TVI24. Kahuna's FormatFusion technology provides maximum flexibility with both SD and HD sources, being able to mix both, becoming a key piece when migrating to 100% HD environments.

Carlos Gomes, deputy technical and engineering director at TVI, commented that "we have chosen to standardize the Kahuna mixer not only because of the uniqueness of its multi-format capacity, but also because Snell brings us its commitment to the support and development service. The Kahuna is very robust in terms of redundancy, also allowing us to use it with different configurations depending on the studio thanks to a simple FTP synchronization that saves valuable time in case we need to have a backup system. Although the switcher meets the needs of our entertainment and news production, we also find the Kahuna offers the best solution for our eventual HD migration.”

With the purchase of the new Kahuna, one will be specially dedicated to the new TVI24 and the other two will be used for the production of special information and entertainment programs. In this regard, Neil Maycock, director of marketing at Snell, highlighted that "TVI is an excellent example of what Kahuna can mean when planning a migration strategy to high definition. Kahunna switchers not only play an important role in TVI's current operation by
handling multiple formats of SD broadcasts, but will allow a gradual and effective migration to HD without needing to immediately change the output equipment.”
