The Ciudad de la Luz Study Center incorporates Pablo Berger into its team
The Bilbao filmmaker will coordinate the Film Direction degree, replacing Mariano Barroso in the position.
From now on, Pablo Berger joins the teaching team of the Ciudad de la Luz Study Center as coordinator of the Film Direction Degree. This Degree has been coordinated to date by Mariano Barroso, who is leaving this position to undertake other projects, although he will continue to be part of the teaching staff of the Study Center.
Since the beginning of his career, the Bilbao filmmaker has combined his work in the audiovisual sector with teaching at one of the most prestigious film schools in the world, the New York Film Academy. Soon, his latest film will be released in Spain, snow white, which has been selected by the Film Academy to compete in the next edition of the Oscar Awards.
The director of the Ciudad de la Luz Study Center, Luis Cruz Miravet, has expressed satisfaction at “having Pablo Berger as coordinator of the Film Directing Degree because he seems to us to be a filmmaker with an impeccable professional career who, in addition, thanks to his teaching vocation, has the necessary requirements to provide the academic excellence that is the hallmark of our teaching institution.”
Cinematographic Direction is part of the Cinematographic and Audiovisual Qualifications offered by the Ciudad de la Luz Study Center, which is made up of, in addition to the aforementioned qualification, Photography Direction, Editing and Editing, Dramatic Art and Cinematographic Scriptwriting and Audiovisual Formats.
A cult filmmaker
Despite having only directed six films since 1988, four short films and two feature films, Pablo Berger is one of our film directors with the greatest international projection, since his audiovisual creations have been recognized by the public and international critics and he has received numerous awards for each of his films.
In his first work, the cult short film Mother (1988), had the collaboration of the singer Torrebruno, the prolific and versatile actor Ramón Barea and the director Álex de la Iglesia, who worked as artistic director on this film. With the awards obtained from this work, he obtained a scholarship to pursue a master's degree in film at New York University. During this period he directed the following short films: Marta and Armando in Atlantic City (1990), Masonand Gladys (1991) y Truth and Beauty (1994).
With this latest short film, Truth and Beauty, was nominated for an Emmy Award and awarded the Jury Prize for Best Comedy at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
In 2003 he made Torremolinos 73, his first feature film, which was considered the revelation film of that year, because, in addition to being a great success at the box office, it received unanimous acclaim from critics and the public. This film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the award for Best Screenplay and the Golden Violet at the Toulouse Cineespaña Spanish Film Festival, the award for Best First Film at the Sant Jordi Festival, the awards for Best Film and Best Director at the Malaga Spanish Film Festival and four Goya nominations.
After more than five years working on the project, it is about to premiere in Spain snow white. A film, inspired by the Grimm Brothers' tale of the same name, that imitates world cinema's storytelling methods, with black and white photography and music as a guiding element.
Recently presented at the Toronto International Festival, snow white It has already begun to achieve resounding success among the public and critics. For the prestigious American critic Roger Ebert, Berger's Snow White is a “silent film full of vigor and visually dazzling.”
This film will soon be presented at the San Sebastián Film Festival and, after having been selected to compete in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the next edition of the Oscars, promises not to leave anyone indifferent.
