The FAPAE proposes "that cinema finances cinema"

The president of FAPAE, Pedro Pérez, within the framework of the San Sebastián Film Festival, has announced a new business model and has requested the Government to pay the debt contracted with the cinema.

As is customary within the framework of the San Sebastián International Film Festival, the joint press conference of FAP (Federación de Asociaciones de Productores Audiovisuales Españoles) y Televisión Española, en la que han participado, por parte de FAPAE, su presidente, Pedro Pérez, y por parte de Televisión Española, el presidente de RTVE, Leopoldo González-Echenique y el director, Ignacio Corrales.

The president of FAPAE has valued the excellent quality that, once again, the San Sebastián Festival exhibits and has congratulated its director, José Luis Rebordinos, for maintaining the number and quality of the Spanish titles participating in it, as well as the constant dialogue that the Festival has maintained throughout the year with the sector. Pedro Pérez has also taken advantage of this appearance to congratulate the film “Snow White”, which had its premiere in San Sebastián, for being chosen to represent Spain in the next edition of the Oscar Awards.

El presidente de FAPAE también ha destacado la disponibilidad existente, por parte del nuevo equipo de TVE, en colaborar con la producción nacional. Desde la Federación se ha enviado un documento con diferentes propuestas que “estoy seguro valorarán”.

Nuevo modelo de negocio

Pedro Pérez ha planteado en esta rueda de prensa dos peticiones muy claras al Gobierno. Por un lado, ha explicado que la parte principal de las ayudas al cine se pagan dos años después del estreno y durante ese tiempo se contrae una deuda con el ICO (Instituto de Crédito Ofical), es decir “es una deuda del Estado, y como tal, el Gobierno tiene que respetarla”.

On the other hand, Pérez has announced that, from FAPAE, a new business model is being coordinated in which “the cinema is the one that pays the cinema” and, therefore, comes out of the General State Budgets. To this end, a meeting has already been planned next week between the producers and the Secretary of State for Culture, José María Lassalle, to start working on this new model, which is nothing new, since it has been carried out for years in other European countries. The President of FAPAE has insisted that in order to make this change, the debt incurred must first be paid.

Billing and employment fall by 14.67%

En San Sebastián, Pedro Pérez ha presentado la Memoria de FAPAE del año 2011, que incluye las actividades institucionales, políticas y de comunicación llevadas a cabo por la Federación, un avance de 2012 y los datos actualizados sobre el sector audiovisual. Cabe destacar que el capítulo de Facturación y empleo contiene información que sólo publica FAPAE.

The president of FAPAE wanted to point out, as a positive fact reflected in the Report, that in 2011 international sales of Spanish audiovisual production experienced an increase of 18.7%, breaking the negative trend of last year. The main cause of this change is, without a doubt, the take-off of film exports, which increased by 51.9% to exceed 41.38 million euros in international turnover.

The FAPAE Report is the only report prepared on the billing and employment of independent production and entails great difficulty due to the absence of official economic data for the audiovisual sector, since only the figures published in the Commercial Registry for the year 2010 are available.

Los datos de facturación y empleo en el sector sufrieron una caída del 14,67 % con respecto al año anterior y el empleo directo generado por las productoras independientes disminuyó un 10,37 %. Pedro Pérez también ha realizado un avance en esta rueda de prensa, presentando los datos de facturación y empleo a julio de 2012; según el último Informe del INE sobre las cifras de negocio y el empleo en el sector servicios, las actividades cinematográficas y de programas de televisión sufrieron una caída interanual del 17,8 % en la facturación y un descenso en el índice de ocupación del 10,9 %. Ambas son las mayores caídas dentro del sector servicios, que descendió un 4,9 % de media en facturación y un 2,9 % de media en empleo.
