ARRI updates its line of Alexa cameras with the new XT models
All Alexa XT models incorporate the new XR Module, a side panel that has been developed with Codex to replace the previous SxS module. The result is a smaller, lighter, more affordable and cable-free camera package that records in ARRIRAW.
Alexa can now capture ARRIRAW at up to 120fps on a fast and robust 512GB XR capture unit. In addition to that, ProRes or DNxHD can be captured on the XR Capture Drive, significantly increasing recording time, as well as recording in ProRes 4444 at 120 fps.
Filtering behind the lenses instead of through them saves money and reduces weight, reflections and improves operation. The Precision IRND filters used with the IFM-1 are based on innovative technologies that ensure the best image quality and perfect color balance from all eight available densities, from ND 0.3 to ND 2.4.
For more effective use of anamorphic lenses, each Alexa XT model will be equipped with a 4:3 sensor, with the same size and shape as Super 35mm film. This is crucial to delivering a unique widescreen cinema visual, tracing its origins back to CinemaScope films from the 1950s.
Another feature that filmmakers will appreciate is the anamorphic decompression license now included in all XT cameras, as well as a high-speed license for shooting at up to 120 fps. The 4:3 sensor will also be useful in non-anamorphic productions, as it allows for significant image reformulation in post, similar to the four-perforation shooting mode in 35mm.
