The Mexican Amat Escalante wins the award for best director for his film 'Heli'.

Closing Ceremony 66th Cannes Festival (Photo: AFP/Cannes Festival)The jury of the 66th edition of the Cannes Festival, chaired for the first time by Steven Spielberg, has chosen to award the Palme d'Or to Adèle's life, a lesbian love story directed by Frenchman Abdellatif Kechiche.

The director and the two protagonists, Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux, received the award in tears, after winning over 19 other films in one of the most important film events in the world.

The Mexican Amat Escalante was awarded the best director award for his film Heli.

The Golden Camera for best first feature went to Anthony Chen for Joy Joy, while the Palme d'Or for best short film has been awarded to Safe, de Moon Byonung-Gon.
