The Swedish 'The Square', Palme d'Or in Cannes
The ironic film directed by Ruben Östlund manages to win the top award at the 70th edition of the Cannes Festival. The Camera d'Or for best first film went to 'Jeune Femme', by Léonor Serraille.
It did not appear in any of the favorites pools but nevertheless the satire on political correctness of the Swedish film The Square, directed by Ruben Östlund, has convinced the jury chaired by Pedro Almodóvar by awarding it the Palme d'Or at the 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival.
The Grand Jury Prize has gone to the Frenchwoman 120 beats per minute, by Robin Campillo, which reviews the history of AIDS activism in the early 1990s in France.
The award for best director went to Sofia Coppola for The seduction set during the American Civil War and starring Nicole Kidman. The Australian actress did not win the best actress award for which she was nominated, but she received a special recognition from the jury in recognition of the fact that she participated in three films and one of the television series presented (not without controversy) at Cannes.
German Diane Kruger for her role in In the Fade, by Fatih Akin, and the American Joaquin Phoenix for You Were Never Really Here, by the British Lynne Ramsay, complete the performance achievements.

Finally, the jury chose to award ex-aequo the award for best screenplay to Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou for The killing of a sacred deer and Lynne Ramsay by You were never really here.
