Microsoft will turn off MSN TV at the end of September

The MSN TV subscription connected television service had become obsolete due to the emergence of numerous connected devices such as video game consoles, including the Xbox itself.

The widespread use of numerous devices such as game consoles, including Microsoft's own Xbox, and the new generation of smart televisions has caused a reorganization of the market in which services such as MSN TV no longer make sense.

Microsoft has announced that its MSN TV subscription connected television service will cease to be operational at the end of next September.

Microsoft bought this service, originally WebTV, for $425 million in 1997, relaunching it as MSN TV in 2001. One of its handicaps was the need to have a decoder and a specific keyboard from which users could check their email on the television, use MSN's chat services or share photos online.
