Canal Nou will close after 24 years of broadcasting
The Valencian Government announces the closure of the regional radio and television after learning of the opinion of the TSJCV that considers the ERE null.
After the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community has rejected the ERE that led to the departure of a thousand professionals on the grounds that it entails irregularities and violates the rights of workers, the Generalitat Valenciana considers the cost of reinstating the 1,000 dismissed workers to be unaffordable, which exceeds 72 million euros. The debt of the Valencian public radio and television is close to 1,400 million euros.
Faced with this situation, the Valencian government has chosen to close public radio and television and fire the 1,700 workers who were still on staff.
"Faced with this situation, two paths were open: the closure of the public company or its resizing, which directly affected the size of the workforce. The will of this Consell has been from the first moment to keep RTVV open, as it offers a public service. Therefore, the second option was chosen and, for the sake of the independence that must govern any process of these characteristics, an external company was entrusted with the process of executing the ERE," assures the Government of Fabra through a statement.
The Consell ensures that they have "the obligation to prioritize basic services" and offload the execution process of the ERE to the management of RTVV, despite the fact that it was designed, supervised and directed by the Valencian Government. “There is only the other way, which is, unfortunately, to proceed to the suppression of the public radio and television service at the regional level,” the statement concludes.
