Panasonic bets big on 4K at NAB 2014

It will present its new 4K RAW camera, the Varicam 35, in Las Vegas, show the third generation of Varicam (Varicam HS) and unveil the next generation of solid-state P2 cards: the ExpressP2 cards

Coinciding with NAB 2014, Panasonic will present its new 4K RAW camera, the Varicam 35, in Las Vegas and will show the third generation of Varicam: the Varicam HS.

The new Varicam 35 incorporates a newly developed Super-35mm MOS sensor with PL mount, and will include the latest family of AVC-ULTRA codecs. With excellent image quality in multiple formats, including 4K, UHD, 2K and HD, and the ability to record at 120 frames per second, the Varicam 35 promises to be ideal for high-end productions, whether in advertising, films and television series, or for the transmission of live events in 4K.

NAB will also be the stage where Panasonic will introduce the next generation of solid-state P2 cards: the ExpressP2 cards. Specifically designed to accommodate 4K image capture, the expressP2 card offers high transfer speeds (up to 2.4Gbps); This means that an hour of 4K content can be consumed in just ten minutes.

The 256GB ExpressP2 card (AU-XP0256A) will offer around 130 minutes in 4K quality at 24p. The simultaneous introduction of the expressP2 card reader (AU-XPD1) will facilitate quick downloading of content via USB3.0.

Thanks to its innovative modular design, the VariCam HS camera, with a type 2/3 mount, can be attached to the AVC-ULTRA recording module to provide the functionality and ergonomics of a conventional shoulder camcorder.

With a capture speed of up to 240fps in 1080p, the camera is designed for those types of productions that require capturing movement in great detail, such as nature documentaries, sporting events or slow motion applications.

Panasonic will also show other recently launched products at NAB, such as the AJ-PX270 camcorder, a handheld P2HD camcorder with AVC-ULTRA recording and network connectivity, or the AV-HS6000 2 M/E mixer.
