Equipped with the new decoder, all Bravia 4K televisions will be able to play content encoded with the HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) video codec.

Sony FMP-X5

Starting next August, all users of Bravia 4K Ultra HD televisions from Sony They will be able to enjoy video content transmitted with the increasingly popular HEVC (H.265) standard.

This compact 4K Media Player, the FMP-X5, connects to an HDMI port on the following Bravia 4K models KDL-84X9005 and KD-65X9005A / 55X9005A.

Equipped with the new decoder, all Bravia 4K televisions will be able to play content encoded with the HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) video codec. HEVC is increasingly popular in the video streaming industry and is used in services such as Netflix. HEVC/H.265 has more efficient encoding than H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, making HEVC ideal for streaming 4K video online, as it requires less bandwidth to stream spectacular 4K images.

HEVC support is already built-in as standard on all 2014 BRAVIA 4K TV models, such as the KD-X9500B/X9000B/X8500B, and therefore do not require this decoder to play HEVC content.
