Best Digital: an international reference in post-production with immersive Atmos sound

Best Digital's facilities include two rooms dedicated to post-production with Dolby Atmos immersive sound. In addition to the large Dolby Premier Atmos room, intended for film productions, it now has the only room in Spain intended for works for authorship with the new Dolby Atmos Home Theater.

Post-production in Dolby Atmos of films such as The Witches of Zugarramurdi, Torrente 5: Operation Eurovegas, Mortadelo and Filemón against Jimmy the Horny and the documentary by Joaquín Gutierrez, Guadalquivir, the first documentary mixed in Atmos or more recently the latest production by Alejandro Amenábar, Regression. Although Dolby Atmos is slowly taking off, it is very important to guarantee maximum sound quality regardless of whether you later intend to output from 7.1 to stereo. Regarding the impact that the crisis has had on the sector, Gómez considers that "the economic situation has led many studios to lower prices. However, we have always believed that lowering prices to get jobs is bread for today and hunger for tomorrow. Obviously, with the crisis we have been forced to offer all kinds of facilities but what we are not going to do is lower quality in order to lower price. The technique has also helped to lower the cost of processes and lower the quality. We have always opted for the latter. in technology and strict quality control. Quality for us has always been untouchable.”

Another aspect that Gómez emphasizes is the full security of all the content that passes through these facilities since "we work digitally with the Aspera system, with all the material encrypted and watermarked... When it comes to physical material, we have a protected room with biometric access."

Dolby Atmos from the movie theater to the living room

Best Digital's facilities include two rooms dedicated to post-production with Dolby Atmos immersive sound. In addition to the large Dolby Premier Atmos room, intended for film productions, its facilities have just opened the only room in Spain (at the moment there are only two others in the United Kingdom and the United States) intended for work for television or Bluray with the new Dolby Atmos Home Theater.

The immersive effect of Dolby Atmos is achieved by assigning a discrete channel to each speaker, up to a maximum of 64 channels, so that the mixer can freely choose where to place each sound. This allows for a much more realistic experience, making possible the effects of displacement and direction of certain sounds towards the audience, thus making the viewer feel truly involved in the film.

Thanks to the plug-in developed by Dolby for ProTools, it is possible to very easily move any sound throughout the room with total transparency (without changing tone or timbre) thanks to the use of full frequency range speakers.

Dolby does not actually work with channels, since each speaker is independent, so we can select a sound and position it in the room at any point on an X/Y/Z axis. Another advantage of this system is its backward compatibility in terms of DCP management, since it maintains single inventory in any output configuration (with a single DCP for all versions).

Atmos, a diferencia de la alternativa que propone Barco con su Auro que trabaja en base a canales en configuración 11.1, es un sistema híbrido ya que mientras los beds nos permite trabajar con un concepto tradicional de canal extendido hasta 9.1, los objetos, se pueden mover por toda la sala ubicándolos o desplazándolos en cualquier punto. De esta forma, podemos afirmar que Atmos más que trabajar con canales trabaja con posicionamiento, renderizando los diferentes objetos en tiempo real en el momento de la exhibición (con metadatos en el DCP). El resultado es un sonido espectacularmente inmersivo que resalta tanto los ambientes sutiles como los diálogos, efectos o música.

Víctor Castillo, director técnico de Best Digital, señala la fuerte apuesta del estudio por Dolby Atmos. “Hemos arriesgado mucho, en un inicio evaluamos los tres sistemas que en ese momento despegaban de manos de Dolby, IMM Sound y Barco… y finalmente apostamos por Atmos de Dolby. Los profesionales que ya han trabajado con nosotros, saben que nos implicamos al máximo en cualquier proyecto. Trabajamos muy estrechamente con nuestro socio tecnológico Dolby y con nuestros clientes, facilitándoles la labor a la hora de enfrentarse a un proyecto desarrollado con una técnica que aún está arrancando”, afirma Castillo.

Al igual que Best Digital fue pionera en 2008 en poner en marcha la primera sala Dolby Premier en España, ahora están marcando el paso con Dolby Atmos. Castillo reconoce que “dada la fuerte competencia que existe en el sector, apostamos por ofrecer algo diferente e ir un paso adelante con respecto a los demás”.

Su sala Dolby Premier Atmos ha pasado los más estrictos controles de certificación de Dolby Laboratories que aseguran que esta sala cumple con su estándar hasta en el más mínimo detalle tanto en monitorización, amplificación, acústica, proyección…

La sala cuenta con dos sistemas de mezcla en configuración híbrida. Por un lado, dispone de Avid Pro Tools con la superficie de control Icon D-Control de 32 faders y, por otro, una mesa clásica AMS Neve DFC Gemini (que hace las veces de mesa y matriz digital tanto para la sala principal como para otras salas de la instalación). De esta forma, Best Digital ofrece máxima flexibilidad a sus usuarios, con dos mesas totalmente diferentes que se pueden emplear simultáneamente, en configuración de consola o como matriz gestora de una red Gigabit Ethernet en fibra.

Un total de 42 altavoces JBL (con amplificadores independientes) recrean un sonido totalmente inmersivo en una configuración lineal con 6 db de margen de picos, asegurando así que los amplificadores nunca entren en saturación incluso en sonidos como explosión o disparos…. y todo, ello con un nivel de ruido en sala totalmente inapreciable. Para lograr esta total ausencia de ruido no sólo se han cuidado al detalle el tratamiento acústico, sino que también se ha dispuesto un circuito de refrigeración de calor y frío por agua bajo suelo radiante que evita así los típicos ruidos de sistemas impulsores de aire.

Por otro lado, al trabajar con procesamiento de señales a 64 bits, la sala ofrece una excelente calidad de audio incluso en grandes producciones con más de 500 pistas, además el motor interno del sistema les permite grabar y reproducir un número de pistas impensable hasta la fecha.

La sala Dolby Premier Atmos de Best Digital cuenta con proyección digital, con un Panasonic de 10.000 lúmenes, y analógica con un Kinoton de alta velocidad.

La isla mínima, Autómata y Mortadelo and Filemón against Jimmy the Horny, tres de las películas que más nominaciones contaron en la última edición de los Goya fueron mezcladas en estas instalaciones. Entre las nominaciones, las tres películas fueron candidatas a conseguir el Goya al mejor sonido.

Por último, destacar que Best Digital acaba de abrir la primera sala española dedicada a la postproducción de Dolby Atmos Home Theater. La sala permite, al igual que su “hermana mayor” dedicada al cine, recrear mediante un set de 12 monitores (cuatro en techo) un sonido envolvente. Tanto el uso de objetos como el planteamiento de las mezclas es similar al trabajo para la gran pantalla, aunque en este caso la sala virtual del sistema se optimiza para salas de pequeñas dimensiones en entornos familiares o corporativos.

Con esta última incorporación, Best Digital se presenta como un estudio puntero, con la última tecnología incluyendo la posibilidad de trabajar con Dolby Atmos (para exhibición cinematográfica o autoría), y con equipo técnico y humano de primer nivel capaz de afrontar cualquier proyecto por complejo que éste sea.
