Spanish cinema doubled the number of spectators in 2014
More than 22.4 million viewers came to see Spanish feature films last year, with a screen share of 25.43%
The Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA) has published the Cinematography Statistics (Production, Exhibition, Distribution and Promotion) on the basis of which automatic aid is granted to film production.
In 2014, Spanish cinema has recorded very positive data, recording a total of 22,412,819 spectators of Spanish feature films, 103.51% more than in 2013, when theaters registered an access of 11,013,096 spectators to see Spanish films.
The box office phenomenon of films like Eight Basque surnames, The Minimum Island, The Child, Torrente 5 and many other titles released throughout last year, boosted the screen share of Spanish cinema to 25.43%. The global number of spectators also rose from 78,690,507 in 2013 to 87,988,991 last year.
In total, 401 Spanish feature films were exhibited (compared to 384 in 2013), and 1,189 of foreign origin, projected in 3,700 exhibition halls.
The collection stood at 518,176,130.41 euros, of which 131,794,104.46 euros corresponded to Spanish feature films, which represents an increase of 87.87% compared to 2013.
The ten production companies with the highest grossing in 2014 were Kowalski, Lazona, Snow Films, Antena 3, El Niño La Pintura, Telefónica Studios, Amiguetes Entertainment, Producciones Ramses, Atypical Films and Sacromonte Films.
By province, the ten with the highest collection were: Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga, Alicante, Seville, Vizcaya, Murcia, Balearic Islands and Zaragoza.
At the end of 2014, the ICAA has registered a total of 710 theaters with 3,700 screens, which represents the closure of 67 cinemas compared to the previous year.
