National Theater Live to broadcast 'Hangmen' on Sony 4K
National Theater Live, Vue Entertainment and Sony launch their fourth production.
National Theater Live to partner with Royal Court and Playful Productions to broadcast Hangmen of London's West End. The work will be captured in the incredible detail of Sony 4K and will be projected in the highest image quality for viewers in Vue Cinemas' 84 theaters.
This production marks the fourth collaboration within the year of partnership between National Theater Live, Vue Entertainment and Sony Digital Cinema 4K, which has already seen 4K productions of Behind the beautiful Forevers, Beaux Stratagem y Hamlet from the stage to the big screen. This work continues to attract the attention of film lovers with first-class theatrical experiences brought to the big screen in unmatched 4K clarity.
Hangmen is the latest production to receive Wyndhams Theatre's specialist 4K event cinema treatment. Working closely with its production partners, Sony has used its versatile technology throughout the established partnership to bring works from a variety of environments, including the Olivier Theatre, The Barbican and Wyndhams Theater to cinema screens.
The National Theatre's first collaboration with the Royal Court
Directed by Matthew Dunster, Hangment, by Martin McDonagh, makes David Morrissey, by The Walking Dead, return to the West End. The production marks the National Theatre's first collaboration with the Royal Court, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. The production will capture McDonagh's darkly comedic work in 4K, bringing clarity to the stage as it moves between shocking scenes set in a bar and a prison.
The production will be shot in 4K and screened in special screenings for Vue customers nationwide on Tuesday, March 22 as a 4K Digital Cinema Package (DCP). This will allow audiences to truly appreciate the expanded color space captured by Sony's PMW-F55 4K camera, offering viewers a life-like experience with richer, more vibrant textures and tones on screen than conventional HD broadcasts.
Emma Keith, producer at National Theater Live, admits that "Hangmen stood out as a perfect option to be captured in 4K. We are able to bring more color and depth to the scenes, with the possibility of enhancing the storytelling through 4K. The level of detail in which viewers can see the action is exceptional; it is destined to become another unique production."
6 PMW-F55 cameras
Hangmen will be filmed with 6 Sony PMW-F55 cameras. Produced with Soho Digital Cinema, NEP Visions and Presteigne to achieve four times the resolution of Full HD, the immersive clarity and level of detail of 4K technology will reveal even the subtlest nuance of every performance.
Viewers in Vue Cinemas theaters will be able to exclusively experience the action on stage in 4K as if they were in the auditorium. Projected using Vue's Sony Digital Cinema 4K projector array, these special 4K screenings will bring the NT production to life. This is an ideal opportunity for theater fans to enjoy a play at their local cinema and for moviegoers to have the best seats at lower prices than a movie ticket.
David McIntosh, Vice President of Sony Digital Cinema 4K Solutions in Europe and America, highlights that "Presented with Sony 4K, this visual production pushes the constantly evolving boundaries of event cinema. This production is the culmination of a rewarding year full of successes with National Theater Live and Vue Entertainment, which has received an extraordinary reception from viewers across the country. We are committed to working with our partners to pioneer the delivery of more impactful experiences to consumers, whether to help our exhibitors to show the latest blockbusters in the best possible quality or to change the course of event cinema. Sony is working on this partnership throughout the production process, from capture itself to delivery in 4K, and Hangmen is another example of this practice.
Kevin Styles, CEO of Vue Entertainment (UK and Ireland), said: "At Vue Entertainment, digital entertainment and innovation are at the heart of our services, so we are proud to be able to bring our viewers this exclusive production in 4K. And, just as importantly, to make it possible for those who would not normally be able to attend the fantastic theater productions to now not only enjoy the excitement of live events, but to do so in the most technically innovative way and in the best possible way. seat.”
