RTVE closes its 2017 accounts with a positive result of 25 million euros
Revenues reached 980 million euros, which represents an increase of around 3 million euros compared to what was budgeted.
The improvement in RTVE's financial situation has been consolidated in 2017, closing the year with a positive result of 25 million euros. This is due to higher income, especially from commercial sources, and the achievement of spending objectives.
Income reached 980 million euros, which represents an increase of around 3 million euros compared to what was budgeted, as a result of higher commercial income, pending the final figure for contributions from telecommunications and television operators.
The RTVE Corporation had a total expenditure of 952 million euros, which represents 98% compliance with the budget, and a reduction of 2% on the expenditure of 2016, a year in which RTVE faced the broadcast of the Rio Olympic Games.
The rigor in management during these years has allowed an increasing amount of resources to be allocated to the production and broadcast of content, which has resulted in a significant increase in audience ratings. Furthermore, RTVE has continued to focus on new formats, especially aimed at younger audiences, such as the launch of the digital content space Playz, which has had a great impact and very significant audiences in the 18-24 year old segment.
Operating expenses have been kept under control, especially general expenses, which have been reduced by almost 5% compared to the previous year, continuing with the trend that began in 2013. RTVE has made a significant effort in this area and has managed to reduce structural expenses in recent years, which reached 280 million in 2009 and decreased this year to 174 million.
Personnel expenses have behaved in line with forecasts, with increases due to salary slippages due to seniority, as well as the 1% increase foreseen in the General State Budgets.
Likewise, the financial situation of the company allowed during the past year a significant reduction in debt and a considerable reduction in the Corporation's financial expenses.
Finally, during 2017, investments amounting to 39 million euros have been made that will allow the production capacity to be increased and modernized, and to continue with the renewal and digital transformation of RTVE.
