The European Broadcasting Union cancels the Eurovision Song Contest 2020
The spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus throughout Europe and the restrictions imposed by Dutch governments and authorities make the celebration of the festival unfeasible.
The 65th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, which was to be held in Rotterdam this May, has been canceled due to the unprecedented situation created around the world by the coronavirus pandemic coronavirus.
The changing circumstances that are occurring both in the Netherlands, host of the festival, and in the rest of the 41 participating countries, have made it impossible to guarantee the protection of all people involved in this edition.
From the EBU they assure that "in recent weeks we have explored many alternative options to allow the Eurovision Song Contest to go ahead. However, the uncertainty created by the spread of COVID-19 throughout Europe, and the restrictions imposed by the governments of the participating broadcasters and the Dutch authorities, has meant making the difficult decision that it is impossible to continue with the live event as planned."
The EBU, NPO, NOS, AVROTROS and the city of Rotterdam will continue to work towards the celebration of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2021.
The EBU wanted to “pay tribute to the entire host broadcaster team in the Netherlands and our 41 members who have worked so hard in planning this year's event.”
The Eurovision Song Contest is considered the largest musical show on television, attracting 200 million viewers from all over the world each year.
Spanish Radio Television has appreciated the commitment of his representative, Blas Cantó, for his dedication and for the work done to represent Spain in Eurovision 2020, and has invited him to be the Spanish candidate in 2021.
