From September 14 to 17, production companies from Barcelona, ​​the Canary Islands, Madrid, Salamanca and Valencia will present their latest animated series projects.

Gemma & the Defenders

European animation takes a new step towards normality with the in-person celebration of the 31st Cartoon Forum, the European co-production forum for animated series held annually in the French city of Toulouse. Of the September 14 to 17, 88 new animated series projects from all over Europe, including six from Spain, will be presented to representatives of television channels, streaming platforms, distributors and potential partners, with the aim of accelerating their financing and production.

The Spanish series that will be presented in the forum are:

  • Agus & Monsters, a Catalan production Motion Pictures based on the successful collection of books written by Jaume Copons and illustrated by Liliana Fortuny. Aimed at children between 6-11 years old, it is a 2D animated series.
  • Champions, a family series inspired by the film Champions, by Javier Fesser and David Marqués, with production by the Madrid companies Morena Films y Pendelton Movies.
  • After the good reception achieved last year with the series Sex Symbols, the Valencian TV On Producciones returns to the Cartoon Forum with Critical Stroke, a family series based on the characters of the graphic comedian Ortifus.
  • Written by Myriam Ballesteros, masked cinderella is a co-production between Mondo TV Iberoamérica and MB Producciones whose protagonist is a heroine capable of saving the world armed only with her courage and imagination.
  • Aimed at the youth-adult/adult audience, Topos is a co-production between Armenteira Producciones and the Salamanca studio Big Bang Box (Momonsters).
  • Turu’s Musical Farm, is a co-production between Tandem Films, Filmax, Turanga Films and Pampa Films based on Gallina Turuleca, a character from the popular children's song recently brought to the big screen.

This will be a unique edition of the Cartoon Forum that will be held under a strict biosafety protocol following the recommendations of the French government and the WHO, as announced by the Cartoon association, organizer of the event. Despite the exceptional conditions of this edition, those responsible for the projects will have the opportunity to present their series in person to professionals in the sector from all over Europe. The series will be released in pitching sessions where producers and directors will have the opportunity to present the concept and characters that make them unique, in addition to previewing, in many cases, their first images.

Diversity in European animation

The selection of the 31st Cartoon Forum offers a complete overview of the current state of European animation, in which children's series produced in 2D and with episodes between 6 and 12 minutes long predominate. 24 European countries participate in the projects, in addition to six countries outside the region as co-producers. The selection is made up of projects from established production companies along with others that are growing rapidly internationally or young production companies in which new animation talents have a place.

With 34 projects, the host country leads the selection followed by Ireland with eight and Denmark and Spain with six. Belgium, Finland and the United Kingdom will be presenting four projects each. The series have an average cost of 4.2 million euros, have a total budget of 370 million euros and represent 505 hours of content.

The animation aimed at children between 6-11 years old continues to be the majority (39 projects (43%), followed closely by series for preschoolers, which already represent 33% (30 projects). Meanwhile, the percentage of proposals for family audiences (11 projects), Young Adults/Adults (8 projects) and Adolescents (3 projects) is maintained compared to previous editions. From a technical point of view, 60% of the projects use 2D animation as an animation technique while 22% opt for 3D CGI.

Growing adaptations

Renowned animation production companies from all over Europe will be presenting their new productions in Toulouse, among which the French Xilam Animation (Gemma & the Defenders), Can’t wait for Monday! (Super-Fight) y Around Midnight (Two Little Birds); the Belgian Lunanime (Tommy Pepper); the Danish Copenhagen Bombay (Rhubarb); the British Illuminated Films (Rocket Robbins) and the Italian Gertie Production (Relay), among other.

About twenty of the selected projects are adaptations of comics, books and even live-action films, an extensive list among which are Belzebubs (Pajama Films), Open Bar (The Goldfish Films), The Upside Down River (Dandelooo), cheek (So ​​Much Better Prod.) o Zombillenium (Maybe Movies).

The animation industry of the Occitanie / Pyrénées-Mediterranée Region, where the event will take place, confirms its strength by participating with three projects.

In support of young talents, Cartoon Forum has also included producers and directors who are working on their first projects and that have been selected in the last two editions of Cartoon Springboard and Cartoon 360 - events dedicated to young talents in animation and for transmedia projects, respectively - organized annually by Cartoon.

Spain, headquarters of Cartoon events

In October and December 2020, Spain will host two events organized by Cartoon. Cartoon Springboard y Cartoon Business. Both seminars are considered a key platform for the promotion of new talents and a key instance prior to presenting series projects in Cartoon Forum or feature films in Cartoon Movie.

Cartoon Springboard is an event pitching that allows young talents from European animation schools to present their project before a panel of experts from the audiovisual world. In addition to the pitching sessions, the seminar includes presentations from experts who will analyze market trends. The next edition of Cartoon Springboard will take place in the city of Valencia from October 27 to 29, 2020 and the deadline to apply for projects ends next September 4. The event has the support of Creative Europe MEDIA, the Generalitat Valenciana, the Institut Valencià de Cultura and the Universitat Politècnica de València.

For its part, A new edition of Cartoon Business will be held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from December 9 to 11, a conference on European animation in which the business challenges of the next decade will be analyzed. The event has the support of Creative Europe MEDIA, the Economic Promotion Society of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the Gran Canaria Film Commission.
