Netflix promotes 'Beyond the Moon' with a spectacular choreography with drones on the satellite
A total of 120 drones and 68 hours of flight between Madrid and the Monegros desert (Huesca) were necessary to produce a unique visual spectacle.
On the occasion of the premiere in Netflix on October 23 of the animated film Beyond the Moon, the platform wanted to go one step further and fulfill for the second time the dream of its protagonist Fei Fei: reaching the moon with a rocket.
To make it happen Pol Turrents, photography coordinator; Raphael Moles, drone animator; Rafael Pons, astrophotography advisor; Ernesto Albacete, drone project manager; and Rafa Roche, director of photography, designed a complex choreography with drones using the moon as the main setting, something unprecedented to date. 120 drones, of which 26 were unusable after filming, a team of fifteen people and 68 hours of flight between Madrid and the Monegros desert, Huesca, result in this unique dance.
How do you explain Pol Turrents, director of photography, "creating this aerial show was not easy. It was highly complicated on a technological level since we brought together different photographic and flight techniques combined with astrophotography. Mixing both is strange. We had to take into account that there were three important elements: the moon, the drones, whose flights are conditioned by the weather, and the position of the camera, which between it and the drones there is a distance of seven kilometers. In addition to squaring the angle of the camera with the moon."
Mathematical calculations
Like the protagonist Fei Fei, the team needed to lock themselves in and perform mathematical calculations aided by specialized software that would allow them to know exactly where to place the camera (Sony), the angle of the optics and the position in which the drones had to fly, in order to achieve a magical result on the screen.
It is noteworthy that all safety and hygiene measures for workers were respected during production.
Driven by her determination and passion for science, little Fei Fei builds a rocket to travel to the moon and prove the existence of the legendary Moon Goddess. There she will be involved in an unexpected adventure and discover an enigmatic world of fantastic creatures. Directed by animation legend, Glen Keane, Beyond the Moon is an exciting musical adventure about moving forward, accepting the unexpected, and the power of imagination.
This is how it was done...
