Spanish National Radio (RNE) and the streaming platform Spotify have signed a first agreement to bring listeners the best audio content. From now on, all users of both the free and premium versions will be able to listen to more than 350 programs by RNE on demand.

Federica Tremolada, general director for southern and eastern Europe at Spotify, comments that "one of our priorities at Spotify is to continue growing our catalog of local content so that users enjoy the best experience. Spain is one of the most important markets for Spotify and the alliance with a radio station with as much history and prestige as Radio Nacional Española is key for us."

"We are very happy that all users in the world can find RNE's great quality of information and entertainment offering on Spotify. We hope this is the beginning of many more collaborations," he adds.

For his part, Ignacio Elguero, director of RNE, recognizes that at the public station At RNE we are sensitive to the changes that occur in terms of new forms of consumption and the habits of listeners who, in a growing proportion, especially among the youngest, embrace digital consumption. That is why we work with RTVE Digital to develop the best digital consumption environment for RNE content, via our own websites and applications, but also by closing collaboration agreements with leading companies in the digital environment such as Spotify, who contribute to increasing the digital dissemination of our stations' content. We are especially excited to be one of the first general chains in Spain to offer its users access to their audio content on Spotify.”

With this agreement, Spotify continues to grow its content catalog in Spain. The most popular streaming platform in the world already has over 2.2 million podcast titles available all over the world, with different categories and themes. As of the fourth quarter of 2020, more than 25% of total monthly active users on Spotify listen to podcasts, up from 19% in the first quarter. Consumption continues to grow at triple-digit rates year after year and this trend will continue to increase, as non-musical content is expected to represent more than 20% of all listeners.

For its part, RNE takes another step in its digital diversification strategy, based on the stations' current websites, native mobile applications, applications for televisions (HbbTV) and applications for smart speakers from RNE, RTVE A la carte and Radio3, which offer live and audio programming from all channels, including also the original digital programs offered by Solo Podcasts o Radio3 Extra. This strategy is completed with specific distribution agreements such as this one with Spotify or Radioplayer.
