Europe-Latin America Co-production Forum

The new projects of Juan Andrés Arango, Agustín Banchero, Inés Barrionuevo, Paula Hernández, Francisco Marise and Romina Paula, among others, will participate in the tenth Europe-Latin America Coproduction Forum.

Germany, by María Zanetti; trucker, by Francisco Marise; Chin-gone, by Johnny Ma; Celestial body / Celestial, by Nayra Ilic García; Where the River Begins / Where the River Begins, by Juan Andrés Arango; The future of the look, by Cristian Leighton; The wind that sweeps away, by Paula Hernández; Spectrum / Spectrum, by Inés Barrionuevo; Night People / People by Night, by Romina Paula; The succession, by Martín Kalina; La virgen de la Tosquera / The Virgin of the Quarry Lake, by Laura Casabé; The Passing Deaths, by Agustín Banchero; Stay still / Stand Still, by Joanna Lombardi; and Sarah, by Álvaro Aponte Centeno are the fourteen projects (seven by female directors and the same number by male directors) that will be presented in the tenth edition of this forum and of which seven will become first or second works.

The projects, selected from among 200 registered, come from seven countries and will compete for the Best Project Award of the Europe-Latin America Coproduction Forum, the DALE! Award! (Latin America-Europe Development) and ArteKino International Award.

This year's edition will be open to professionals who have Industry accreditation and will have a hybrid format (if the pandemic allows): it will be held in person on the days September 20, 21 and 22 at the San Telmo Museum and on Wednesday the 22nd, the accredited industry that has not been able to travel to San Sebastián will have the opportunity to make online appointments.

The selection for this new edition of the Forum has a great variety of topics: reflections on recent history, films of the coming of age and road trips genre, projects arising from confinement, proposals somewhere between fiction and non-fiction and a foray into the field of horror.

For some of the new filmmakers, the selection of their projects at the Forum will be their first participation in San Sebastián: the short filmmaker María Zanetti will present Germany; Martín Kalina, whose short film Los pales competed in Locarno, will defend La succession, while Nayra Ilic García will do the same with Cuerpo Celeste.

Directors who already participated in the Festival with their debut works return to San Sebastián with their second feature film projects: Romina Paula (Night People), which won the Horizontes Prize in 2019 with Again once again / Again once again and participated in 2020 in the Official Section with the collective film Unlimited Edition / Unlimited Edition; and Francisco Marise (trucker), which presented Para la guerra / To War in New Directors in 2018. In addition, Agustín Banchero (The passing deaths) and Inés Barrionuevo (Spectrum) will combine the defense of their projects at the Forum with the presentation of their most recent films in different competitive sections of the Festival: Banchero will compete in New Directors with Hilda's Vacation / Hilda's Short Summer, from Cinema in Progress (currently WIP Latam), and Barrionuevo will compete for the Golden Shell of the Official Section with Camila comes out tonight / Camila Comes out Tonight after having participated in New Directors with Julia and the fox / Julia and the Fox (2018).

Other filmmakers whom the Festival has accompanied in their careers and who present projects are Joanna Lombardi (stay still), who participated in the 2016 Forum with Panza de burro; Juan Andrés Arango (Where the day begins), which he had already presented in Cinema in Progress The Beach, premiered in Un Certain Regard at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and X500 at the 2014 Co-Production Forum, films also selected in Horizontes Latinos; Paula Hernandez (The Wind That Devastates), which competed in Horizontes Latinos in 2019 with The Sleepwalkers / The Sleepwalkers, and Álvaro Aponte Centeno (Sarah), who participated in the 2014 Forum with Noli and in Cinema in Progress with The silence of the wind (2016).

Completing the selection of the Europe-Latin America Co-production Forum are the first participations in San Sebastián by experienced filmmakers such as Johnny Ma (Chin-Gone), whose previous feature films have premiered in Berlin, Toronto and Cannes Critics' Week; the renowned documentary filmmaker Cristian Leighton (The future of the look) and Laura Casabé (The Virgin of Tosquera) who, after winning the Best Director Award at the Sitges Festival with Those who return (2019), will present his new horror project scripted by Benjamín Naishtat.
