Young One Studio - Blackmagic

Blackmagic cameras and the DaVinci Resolve Studio post-production solution are the two main technological pillars of Los Angeles-based production company Young One Studio.

Although Maty Young and Tamiah Bantum founded the company in Melbourne, Australia in 2015, just three years later they decided to move to Los Angeles to enter the music video and commercials market as well. Because of his background as a musician and actor, Young takes on the role of director and cinematographer, while Bantum, who has extensive experience in motion-capture sensor acting, is in charge of the production and management of the company.

Initially, Young and Bantum could not consider acquiring a film camera because of the investment required. However, Blackmagic Design opened the door to this world for them because, as Young recalls, “The camera image that was coming out of these sensors at the price point was unbeatable.” Bantum shares his colleague’s opinion: ““We wanted to be able to own reliable bodies that were cost effective and that produced stunning visuals, and the Blackmagic cameras checked all the boxes for us.”

Initially, Young One Studio opted for a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K unit, as it offered the ability to shoot in Blackmagic RAW format. They subsequently purchased the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K and Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro versions, as well as the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 and URSA Mini Pro 12K digital cinema models. With multiple camera systems at their disposal, Young and Bantum have a great deal of creative freedom when it comes to each project: “Currently we utilize the Pocket 6K Pro and URSA Mini Pro 12K the most. The URSA Mini Pro 12K produces a stunning image and is extremely reliable as an A camera. The Pocket 6K Pro complements it very well when we need to throw something light on a gimbal, use it as a stunt cam, or grab B roll. The Pocket 6K Pro is also handy for guerilla style shooting as it can be rigged handheld and is great to run around with on location.”

The finishing touch with DaVinci Resolve

Beyond production, the company has been using DaVinci Resolve Studio since version 15 for its advanced colour grading capabilities. Bantum points out that the software offers an “single solution for postproduction.” In his own words: “It was an excellent way to streamline our process, rather than having to rely on other editing software in the hopes they’d work together.”

“We were never big fans of round tripping media. Like all things with our business, we like concise and clear setups which is exactly what Resolve gives us,” adds Young, who also welcomes the versatility and accessibility of Blackmagic’s system: “As we do almost all post production ourselves, from editing and coloring to mixing and mastering, Resolve having absolutely everything all in one place is just perfect. Every other piece of editing software feels as if it has a convoluted mess of a menu system and layout. DaVinci Resolve is so clear and easy to understand it just feels much newer, sleeker and better designed.”
