SailGP and T-Mobile will improve the experience of fans and sailors thanks to 5G
For seasons 4 and 5, which span from 2023 to 2025, SailGP will use advanced 5G network solutions from T-Mobile for immersive onboard cameras for fans, and low latency connectivity to improve sailing for sailors.
SailGP will take advantage of a 5G Hybrid Mobile Network from T-Mobile's 5G Advanced Network Solutions (5G ANS) portfolio to further elevate the fan experience with innovative and immersive views of live racing action and provide SailGP athletes with advanced on-water performance analysis.
Thanks to the Secure, ultra-reliable, low-latency 5G connectivity From T-Mobile's 5G hybrid mobile network, SailGP fans and athletes are already benefiting. In the case of hobbyists, technology 5G Advanced Network Solutions from T-Mobile is already powering the new action cameras mounted on the 10 SailGP F50s (15-meter flying catamarans that compete at speeds of more than 100 km/h) that offer POV live broadcasts to help fans get into the action on board from the athlete's point of view.
All SailGP F50s are now connected to 5G and feature POV cameras that are used to live stream high-definition video from each F50 to SailGP's broadcast studio in London.
These wireless cameras are integrated with 5G modules, making them ideal for mounting wherever needed on the F50s, and can use the Artificial intelligence to track the movement of athletes, ensuring every moment of action is captured.
Callie Field, president of T-Mobile Business Group, comments: "We are constantly pushing the boundaries of what 5G can do for consumers and businesses. Delivering fast, reliable analytics along with immersive viewing experiences in a difficult offshore environment is literally a game-changer."
5G is also enabling another breakthrough for sailors. During last month's Oracle Los Angeles Sail Grand Prix, SailGP strategists on board were carrying 5G equipped phones providing live data from the race to help them make key tactical decisions in real time, all while flying over the water at highway speeds with nine other F50 catamarans close behind.
“SailGP and T-Mobile for Business are committed to pushing the boundaries of innovative ways to bring fans to the center of the action through live onboard camera views,” he stressed. Warren Jones, CTO of SailGP. “In addition, our athletes can now access real-time data, further accelerating the decision-making capabilities of our 10 national teams.”
Across the SailGP F50 fleet, there are 125 sensors mounted on each F50, which they send 300,000 data points every second through T-Mobile 5G routers, resulting in 48 billion data points on a single race day. “Our F50 catamarans are essentially massive Internet of Things (IoT) devices that also provide incredible entertainment for fans, whether in person or watching from around the world,” says Jones.
As official 5G partner for SailGP events in the United States, T-Mobile for Business will feature prominently at each of the four 2023/24 Season 4 US events, including next summer's Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix in June 2024, and the SailGP Season 4 Grand Final in San Francisco in July 2024. Additionally, T-Mobile for Business remains the official 5G partner of the US SailGP team.
