Access - Ecoflow - environmental impact streaming IBC 2024

I'm coming y Humans Not Robots (HNR) co-direct Ecoflow (Energy-Conserving Optimization for Future-ready, Low-impact Online Workflows), a project that is part of the IBC Accelerator Program that aims to measure, evaluate and educate about the environmental impact of streaming and that will be presented within the framework of IBC 2024.

In collaboration with leading companies across the video streaming ecosystem, including BBC, ITV, Bitmovin, RTL Netherland, Quanteec, Cognizant, IET, Fraunhofer Fokus, Greening of Streaming, DIMPACT y la UER, Ecoflow aims to increase certainty and information on the energy use of key components of the value chain of the streaming, and understand how they react in different conditions. To achieve this, participating members are working on the collection of energy consumption metrics on the main steps of the end-to-end streaming supply chain, initially focusing on the CDN, the coding and the end user devices.

The results of the project, which will see the light in IBC 2024, will be used for explain and educate on the current state of measurement guidance, as well as to lay the foundation for energy-efficient broadcasting and public participation in the future. This will be especially important in light of the upcoming environmental regulations.

François Polarczyk, sustainability director of I'm coming, point out Ecoflow: "Accedo is committed to contributing to a more sustainable future by helping to reduce the carbon footprint of video streaming, which is why the Ecoflow project is very important to us. Working in collaboration with industry partners, we are taking crucial steps towards identifying and demonstrating opportunities for the industry to make media processing, streaming and consumption more sustainable." Kristen Bullett, CEO of HNR, adds: "The Ecoflow project is an important milestone in the industry's path towards greater sustainability. The initiative demonstrates that, when streaming stakeholders collaborate, significant progress can be made towards creating a more environmentally friendly industry."
