Standardization has largely been completed, trial operations by Europe's major broadcasters have been underway for several years and the first smartphone prototypes including essential 5G Broadcast features have already been developed.
Several members of the UER (European Broadcasting Union) and the BNE (Broadcast Networks Europe) have formed a working group to establish a common receiver profile for the Broadcast 5G in Europe with the support of Qualcomm. As a result, a receiver profile has been finalized. 5G broadcasting for Europe and has been presented to 5G-MAG, the industry association that, among other tasks, oversees the development and maintenance of the 5G Broadcast specification (ETSI TS 103 720).
He profile is publicly available on the 5G-MAG GitHub page and open to revision and comments from the European broadcast sector. The common goal is to add this profile in the next version of the ETSI specification to clearly communicate European requirements in a profile that ensures harmonization across Europe to enable and encourage manufacturers of chipsets and CE to incorporate the profile into their development roadmaps.
Antonio Arcidiacono, CTO and CIO of the EBU, values this milestone in the development of the 5G Broadcast: "The development and introduction of 5G Broadcast [...] has been supported by several EBU members in a series of tests in Europe since 2020. The large-scale Olympic demonstration [this summer] in France, with hundreds of consumer devices, is marking a key evolution moving towards market introduction. The definition of the European profile gives a clear indication to all chipset and CE manufacturers on the market needs in Europe. The launch of a demonstration service 24H/7 in five major urban areas in Italy in 2025 will further accelerate the implementation of 5G Broadcast in the development roadmaps of major manufacturers.»
On the other hand, Lars Backlund, secretary general of BNE, adds: "BNE supports 5G Broadcast as part of our innovation roadmap. In addition to spectrum security and together with the deployment and investments in 5G Broadcast transmission infrastructure, broadcast network operators also support the development of a viable terminal ecosystem. Having a common receiver profile throughout Europe is a necessary element to achieve this objective."
