Canon showcases its new advanced optical unit for 4K field lenses for the first time at NAB
Canon launches at NAB 2025 its new optical unit for 4K broadcast, which can be incorporated into the UHD-Digisuper 122 and UHD-Digisuper 111 field lenses to help create images with a reduced depth of field. These lenses, in combination with this optical unit, will provide high magnification zoom and video expression that will allow easy focusing and help enhance the subject, even at a very bright aperture.
The demand for high-impact images, which highlight the subject through a shallow depth of field, continues to grow in both the sports sector and live productions. However, keeping your subject in focus at a large aperture at a live event can be difficult, as subjects can move quickly and unpredictably. This unique optical unit produces spectacular video images, with a shallow depth of field, even with very bright apertures and, furthermore, it is easy to focus, thanks to its extended focal range.
Lenses that have this optical unit installed will allow camera operators Easily switch between traditional broadcast looks and enhanced shallow depth of field. Additionally, the optical unit maintains a color tone consistent with current field targets. This design allows users to capture high-quality images in familiar recording environments, without the need for new cameras, lenses, workflows or additional operating equipment.
The combination of optical unit and lens covers a great focal length that larger format lenses cannot achieve and also provides greater versatility in different recording conditions. All professionals currently working with the UHD-Digisuper 122 and UHD-Digisuper 111 field lenses will be able to request the new optical unit to be installed through a paid personalized service. New versions of the UHD-DIGISUPER 122 and UHD-Digisuper 111 with the optical drive pre-installed are planned to be available later.
The new UHD-DIGISUPER 122 'Novel Look' lens will be on display for the first time at NAB, the broadcast and video production equipment fair, at Canon's booth N2103, which will be held in the city of Las Vegas (Nevada, USA), from April 6 to 9, 2025.
Cameras
Canon's booth at NAB 2025 features its entire line of RF cine lenses with 8K recording capabilities, as well as all of its flex zoom cine lenses. It also shows your latest offers from your line of Cinema EOS cameras and cameras PTZ. Also, camera color matching app for CR-N700 PTZ makes its first appearance at NAB. Attendees can experience a technological advancement of the application of Integrated auto tracking with advanced multi-subject tracking support on Canon PTZ cameras, and the app Live Switcher Mobile iOS is displayed on the touch counter.
Another notable novelty that will be shown will be the new version of the Canon multi-camera control app for iPhone and iPad, which adds control for Canon's range of PTZ cameras. It also presents its technology for multi-camera orchestration (MCO), a system that allows a single operator to control multiple PTZ cameras.
As for the EOS range of cameras, the star is probably being the EOS R8, a mirrorless camera that incorporates a 24.2 megapixel Full Frame CMOS sensor, high ISO sensitivity and a higher dynamic range. Furthermore, it allows record 4K 60p videos high quality to enjoy clear and detailed video content.
The camera has intelligent autofocus. He Dual Pixel CMOS AF II keeps any type of subject sharply in focus, both in photo and video, even as it moves around the frame. As for depth of field refers, captures striking portraits with a prominent subject against a soft, out-of-focus background thanks to its larger sensor, which provides a shallower depth of field and greater dynamic range.
On the other hand, his 1.6 times wider viewing angle than cameras with APS-C sensor allows you to take more immersive images. By upsampling the 6K sensor data, the EOS R8 Produces high-quality 4K video footage at speeds up to 60p.
