Sony reinforces its commitment to the industry at NAB 2025

Among the offer of solutions that Sony exhibits at NAB 2025 highlight Super 35 mm studio cameras, camera tracking systems and improvements in workflows through the cloud and IP protocols. It also presents updates to products such as the HDC-F5500V camera, professional 4K monitors and tools for virtual production such as the Ocellus system and new applications in the Creators' Cloud.

In Las Vegas, Sony immerses visitors to its booth (N439) in leading innovations, insights, workflows and expertise in four key areas: live production, news and production workflows, imaging solutions y virtual production. Sony's ecosystem of tools drives connections and creativity and streamlines processes for individual creators and enterprise productions. New highlights include a Super35mm variable neutral density (VND) camera system, an ultra-compact full-frame camera extension system, and a camera tracking solution to enrich content creation.

Sony technologies enable new forms of expression and productivity over IP and cloud protocols, cinematic capture y spatial content creation, as well as workflows expanded augmented reality (XR) and virtual effects (VFX). The cámara HDC-F5500V Super 35mm 4K CMOS for live production, the next step in the evolution of Sony system cameras, makes its debut at NAB 2025. The camera features a global shutter, PL objective mount and a new optional software license that adds VND functions for greater depth of field control and a wide range of brightness control using virtual iris functions. The camera provides highly detailed images and depth of field control. It also offers workflow benefits, such as a host of features for HDR and SDR production, and the same infrastructure as its 2/3-inch HDC-5500V counterpart, including IP networking, remote multi-camera operation and camera control unit (CCU) recording option. It is scheduled to be available on the market next summer.

Thanks to a recent firmware update to version 1.1, the CNA-2 camera control network adapter now supports integrated management of multiple locations through the Global Multi Camera System (GMCS) from Sony, enabling remote operation of numerous cameras for large-scale sporting events and other applications. Additionally, using the optional HZC-MSUCN2 license, simultaneous configuration changes and color adjustments can be made for multiple cameras via a web browser.

On the other hand, Sony also exhibits the new compact and light camera HDC-P50A con caja POV (point of view). This multifunction camera, which is on sale now, features a 3-chip 2/3-inch 4K global shutter image sensor, installation flexibility, up to 8x HD and 4x 4K output, direct IP connectivity and full CCU integration, while offering the same image quality and operational features as Sony's HDC Global Shutter family. The software-defined multimedia node, Nevion Virtuoso, is expanded with a new high-density AES/Analog/MADI converter and a plug-in that provides more audio sources. Virtuoso's HEVC low latency and low bitrate technologies will also be highlighted. The Nevion VideoIPath media orchestration platform will be showcased, which can now orchestrate 5G and cloud environments, offering customers greater flexibility for their contribution or production environments.

It should also be noted that Hawk-EyeHawkREPLAY provides a streaming solution instant replays for flexible on-premises, hybrid and remote production workflows. It can be used in conjunction with Sony's HDC-5500 4x 4K Camera or HDC-P50A POV Camera and CCU to enable 4K HFR and UHD pan and scan functions along with a cloud technology showcase. Within the Broadcast Solutions ecosystem, HawkNEST, an ISO recording and asset management system, will also be showcased with new control console features and Channel Navigator tool.

News and production workflow

Ci Media Cloud, a multimedia asset management and collaboration service available as part of the package Creators’ Cloud from Sony, has added support for new formats and exciting integrations to simplify and automate post-production workflows. Ci Workflow now supports almost all RAW formats of camera, making your self-service VFX pull solution even more powerful. Ci has also added a DaVinci Resolve Studio extension which allows editors to seamlessly access Ci files, edit, relink, render and share cuts without having to leave their NLE (non-linear editing). Additionally, Sony has added direct cloud camera support for the FX3, FX30, and Alpha 7S III (sequentially), with additional model support to come, allowing camera owners to automatically upload to Ci without the need for additional hardware.

Imaging solutions

The recently announced Venice Extension System Mini adds flexibility to Sony's iconic Venice 2 full-frame digital cinema camera by allowing the camera sensor to be detached and extended from the camera body via a slim, detachable cable. It is approximately 70 percent smaller than the previous extension system, for use in small, difficult locations. When two units are used side by side, stereoscopic clips can be captured naturally for spatial content creation and VFX background capture. The system is planned to be available in summer 2025.

A firmware update version 2 for the Burano full frame film camera will include new recording formats for faster sensor performance, headlined by a 3.8K Full Frame crop at up to 120fps and a 1.9K Super 35 mode that can capture up to 240fps. Also on display are the compact handheld camcorders PXW-Z200 XDCAM and HXR-NX800 NXCAM 4K HDR with network connectivity, AI-based subject recognition, precise autofocus and the option to add MPEG HD422. When it comes to professional audio, the DWX series expands with digital wireless transmitter DWM-30 which supports a wider range of frequencies and codecs, as well as simultaneous multi-channel operation.

At NAB Show 2025, the company presents the The Oellus Chamber System System (ASR-CT1), a markerless tracking system that can be used indoors and outdoors. This innovative new solution is camera independent and uses four of the five image sensors of a sensor unit to track feature points in video signals. The Ocellus is ideal for use in both broadcast applications, such as news, sports and weather, and film applications. The camera tracking system is expected to be available in fall 2025.

In addition, Sony's virtual production toolset, a series of resources that streamline pre-production and shooting workflows, includes new features that will be seen first-hand to bring pre-visualization to life before production takes place. Updated software addresses viewing angle correction and adds Crystal LED off-axis color offsets. Furthermore, it allows render high quality CG backgrounds at high frames per second by accelerating ray tracing and also supports displaying real-time moiré alerts for Venice 2 operation.
