‘Sîrat’, ‘Romería’ and ‘Sorda’, preselected to represent Spain at the Oscars

‘Sîrat’, de Oliver Laxe, ‘Romería’, de Carla Simón, y ‘Sorda’, de Eva Libertad, son las tres películas preseleccionadas por la Film Academy para representar a España en la próxima edición de los Oscar que tendrá lugar en Los Ángeles el 15 de marzo de 2026.

The actress Emma Suarez and the actor Juan Diego Botto han sido los encargados de dar lectura a las películas que harán serán sometidas a la votación final hasta el 17 de septiembre por parte de los académicos para representar al cine español en los Oscar, los premios más importantes de Hollywood.

Sîrat es una película original Movistar Plus+ producida en colaboración con El Deseo, Filmes Da Ermida, Uri Films y 4A4 Productions. El argumento de la película, escrita por Oliver Laxe y Santiago Fillol (co-guionista también junto a Laxe de O que arde y Mimosas) versa sobre un hombre y su hijo que acuden a una rave perdida en medio de las montañas del sur de Marruecos. Buscan a Mar, su hija y hermana, desaparecida hace meses en una de esas fiestas sin amanecer.

As to Pilgrimage It is the third film written and directed by Carla Simón. Produced by Elástica Films, it stars Llúcia García and Mitch Robles. In its plot, in 2004, the young orphan Marina travels to Vigo to seek information about her biological father, who died due to AIDS. She meets her uncle and the rest of her paternal family, who are however reluctant to look back at the past due to the shame caused by Marina's biological parents' problems with substance abuse.

Finally, Deaf is written and directed by Eva Libertad, based on her 2021 short film of the same name. The film, produced by Distinto Films, Nexus Creafilms, A Contracorriente Films and Diverso Films, tells the story of Ángela, a deaf woman who is going to have a baby with Héctor, her hearing partner. The arrival of the girl alters the couple's relationship, and leads Ángela to face raising her daughter in a world that is not made for her.
