INFiLED - BBC Studioworks

Two DBmk2 series LED displays INFiLED renew the aesthetics of the Television Center set of the BBC intended for broadcasts of the national lottery, a format that is broadcast six nights a week to the entire United Kingdom public.

When Allwyn, operator of the National Lottery, was looking for a new headquarters for its live draws, BBC Studioworks proposed creating a new study in his Television Centre from London. In the center of that installation there are two LED screens INFiLED DBmk2's 5 x 3 meters and 1.95 mm, placed in a 90 degree angle each other. Together, they allow the studio environment to transform “instantly”, allowing multiple lottery games with different images at the “press of a button”.

Above all, with live draws taking place six nights a week, there was no room for downtime, so the system had to be reliable. At the same time, the design had to continue to focus on the star of the program: the raffle machine.

To address this challenge, BBC Studioworks selected the series INFiLED DBmk2 for its high resolution, mechanical reliability and competitive positioning in the broadcasting market. In the words of Tim Wood, director from BBC Studioworks Television Centre: "We chose the INFiLED DBmk2 series for its reliability and high resolution. We were very impressed with the quality of the product, both visually and electronically and mechanically."

By specifying a fine pixel pitch of 1,95 mm, combined with proper management of the camera's depth of field and optical filtering, the team ensured that the LED grid did not conflict with the camera sensors, delivering a sharp broadcast image even at close range. Furthermore, the CBSF technology (Color and Brightness Shift Free) by INFiLED, integrated into the DBmk2 series, maintains a stable color temperature in a wide viewing angle of 160 degrees.

Before the final acquisition, BBC Studioworks carried out extensive testing, allowing the technical team to evaluate performance directly in their own filming conditions: "We were very pleased with the demo panel that INFiLED provided us, as well as the technical support from the team. This gave us the opportunity to focus our cameras on the screens at our own pace to ensure we could get the look and feel we needed. Then ordering and receiving the product from INFiLED was a breeze," recalls Wood.

Now that it is fully operational, the study delivers consistent results week after week: “We are already well underway in rolling out the study, and Allwyn UK, our client, couldn't be more pleased.”
