Cinespaña 2009, Spanish cinema in France
From October 2 to 11, 2009, Cinespaña 2009, the 14th Spanish Film Festival, will take place in Toulouse and Midi-Pyrénées (France).
For 14 years and during the month of October, the theaters of Toulouse and the Midi-Pyrénées region have been living for a few days to the Spanish rhythm... This year, from October 2 to 11, 2009, in collaboration with La Cinemateca de Toulouse, the Cervantes Institute, the Casa de España, l'ESAV (Ecole Supérieure des Arts Audiovisuels de Toulouse), as well as with the ABC, UGC, Utopia and others spread throughout the region, the Cinespaña Festival offers the best Spanish production to the French public. Unreleased films, premieres, cinema-concerts and masterpieces of Spanish cinema will be accompanied by numerous guests.
A selection of seven recent feature films, many of them unreleased in France, will compete for the Golden Violet for Best Film with a prize of €7,500 awarded by the Toulouse City Council to the director. The jury will be made up of five personalities from the world of cinema. A selection of thirteen short films will compete for the Best Short Film award, with a financial prize of €6,000 awarded by the Toulouse City Council to the director. This year the jury will be made up of three filmmakers based in the Midi-Pyrénées region: Catherine Ayra, Jacques Mitsch and Jean-Christian Tassy. The Student Jury will decide the award for best new actor or actress, while the Raíces Jury will choose the award for best documentary, with a promotional campaign in Raíces magazine. Finally, the public will vote for the best film, which will enjoy an advertising campaign in the regional newspaper La Dépêche du Midi.
In the Panorama Section you can see a selection of recent feature films and short films that will make us discover the richness and quality of Spanish productions. The Documentary Section will propose a dozen feature-length documentaries about current Spanish society.
Within the framework of the programming dedicated to European New Waves (September 5 – October 29), the Toulouse Cinematheque proposes, in collaboration with Cinespaña, a tribute to the Barcelona School, an ephemeral cinematographic movement from the 60s. Strongly influenced by the French New Wave, it was born as a response to plateau cinema and the new Spanish cinema. The movement brought together an informal group of young filmmakers who, under an anti-Franco position and prioritizing artistic will over everything else, decided to free themselves from the administrative and aesthetic pressures that weighed on Spanish cinema at that time. Six notable films will allow us to rediscover some of the jewels of the Barcelona School: Dante is not only severe, by Joaquim Jordà and Jacinto Esteva, the movement's manifesto film; Girl Morgana, by Vicente Aranda; Every time…, by Carles Durán; Squizo, by Ricardo Bofill; Far from the trees, by Jacinto Esteva and Tomorrow, by José María Nunes.
Three exhibitions will complete this edition of Cinespaña: the one dedicated to Joan Jordà, painting and sculpture, at the Cervantes Institute, the photography exhibition “Libro de Oro” from the 2008 Cinespaña Festival, at the FNAC; and Luís and Alfonso Buñuel “collage and cinematography”, at ESAV.
