Don HewittDon Hewitt, the creator of the CBS News show 60 Minutes and one of the most influential behind-the-scenes figures in American television journalism, has died at the age of 85, a victim of cancer. Although he produced and conceived numerous television programs, it was the prestigious investigative informative documentary program that catapulted him to fame. After 60 years on the job, 55 of them at CBS where he arrived in 1948, Hewitt left the executive production of 60 Minutes in 2003.

Hewitt produced and directed the first televised debate between presidential candidates, in the 1960 election between John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon, and has since covered major news events for CBS during 1964, when he left the prestigious afternoon news production and began handling special projects. That's when the idea appeared 60 Minutes, which debuted in 1968.
