Antonio Larreta, creator of the series 'Curro Jiménez', dies
The Uruguayan author and theater director also participated in the scripts of films such as 'The Holy Innocents' or 'The Things of Wanting'.
Antonio Larreta, Uruguayan author and theater director, creator of television series Curro Jimenez, died this Wednesday afternoon in Montevideo at the age of 92.
Winner of the Planeta Prize in 1980 for his novel They flew away, Larreta also participated in the conception and scriptwriting of major film projects such as The things of wanting, directed by Jaime Chávarri; The fencing master, by Pedro Olea; Bernarda Alba's house and The Holy Innocents, by Mario Camus. He also collaborated with other directors such as Antonio del Real, Pilar Miró and Giménez Rico.
Larreta's relationship with Spain dates back to his exile from a Uruguay under the military dictatorship from 1973 to 1985. Returning to Uruguay, he directed the Comedia Nacional and founded the company Teatro Sur.
Born in Montevideo in 1922, he founded the Theater Club and the Theater of the City of Montevideo, where he directed numerous productions. His first film as a director was I have never been to Vienna (1989). As an actor he starred in films such as The window, by the Argentine Carlos Sorín in 2008.
