Numericable and Nagravision develop a TV 2.0 project
The TV Widget service that will allow viewers to interact with their television, building a genuine social network as part of their television experience. The agreement between Numericable and Kudelski Group, parent company of Nagravision, will mean the introduction in 2010 of a new SDV technology that will allow increasing the number of channels thanks to multichannel broadcasting.
Widget Tv symbolizes in a way the concept of television 2.0, approaching the consumer as a small gadget with a simple software application that is very easy to use. Numericable with its particular MyTv offer, it will allow viewers, through this Nagravision technology, to send alerts about content and programming to their friends. Numericable subscribers will be able to choose widgets from a large gallery, including on-demand players, that will allow them to share videos and stay informed of their online social network updates.
This Nagravision platform will allow Numericable to work alongside software application providers and developers on innovative new content. The Widget TV platform will also be opened with other external services such as, for example, the Apple Store. The platform also includes Nagra Studio Widget, a powerful service publishing tool that gives operators and their partners the ability to create custom libraries of widget services that allow them to make payment profitable. The system is based on the Nagra Media CMS (Content Management System), the NAGRA Media SDP (the service delivery platform), and the OpenTv Core 2.0 middleware and its associated HTML browser.
A new way of making television
For the first time in Europe, Numericable has deployed SDV multicast technology developed by Nagravision in its network. The SDV (Switched Digital Video) is based on the Nagra Media SDP solution that allows unlimited extension of audiovisual content. Thanks to this technology, Numericable will be able to offer new on-demand services to its subscribers. While with traditional broadcasting technology, television channels are sent in a single sequence to all subscribers, with SDV technology it is possible to send the requested channel directly to the subscriber's set-top box (including VoD services). It will also allow the creation of new offerings designed for specific communities and the transmission of WebTV programs that until now could not justify the use of a dedicated broadband network.
