The debut of Emilio Aragón as a feature director could not have started on a better foot since a few days after its premiere, the public is responding massively to this commitment by Versátil Cinema and Antena 3 Films. paper birds, which according to the Sensor de EPC, was filmed in 35mm with EPC camera material, a MovieCam Compact MK2 in three perforations in Super 35 and 2.35:1 format, with Master Primes optics, with David Omedes in charge of photography, who was accompanied by Javier Alomar as an assistant.
Among the chosen locations, Almagro, Chinchón, Colmenar de Oreja, San Martín de la Vega (Gózquez estate), La Granjilla... and Madrid, in settings such as Plaza de la Paja and neighboring streets, which saw time go back to the late 1930s, like the Railway Museum or the Madrid Casino.
A careful setting
“The challenge of paper birds "It was to recreate a time of scarcity, pain and misery in which art with capital and lower case letters was the heating capable of lighting up the most desolate hearts," Santiago de la Rica, executive producer, explains in his production notes. "So the setting had to be very careful: the old had to be old, the dust had to be dust and the musicians had to be musicians. And the show had to be total. The music numbers had to be (im)perfection, the props had to look like it and the opposite, and the bombs and action scenes had to be explosive, painful, creating shock waves that went beyond the rubble. The challenge was not small.”
Also says the executive producer of paper birds, as recorded by the EPC Sensor, that they were moved by an impulse that has been present in the project from the beginning: "we responded to a contagious illusion of knowing that we were preparing one of those 'larger than life' films. The lives of those who in some way have made us what we are and that we are here."
Pájaros de papel is an ambitious production that was born from the beginning with an international vocation. "It brings together all the elements that lead a product to be universal from the particular. We wanted to follow the path of that highly crafted European cinema that ends up being recognized beyond any border." And it is, above all, a film that wants to move people and make them laugh. “We have put everything in our power to achieve it,” concludes Santiago de la Rica. Along with him, in the executive production is Emilio Aragón himself, who is also co-producer with Mercedes Gamero. In production management, Carlos Apolinario, and Raquel Díaz as production manager.
