TVE will finance 90 projects, including feature films, documentaries and TV movies
In 2011, 41 feature films, 38 documentaries, 8 'TV movies' and 3 animation productions were approved, which will soon begin filming thanks to the support of TVE.
TVE reaffirms its support for Spanish cinema, although it will invest five million euros less than the previous year, going from 45 in 2010 to 40.5 in 2011.
The public channel has announced within the framework of the San Sebastián Festival its participation in the financing of 90 audiovisual projects: 41 feature films, 38 documentaries, 8 television films and 3 animation products. The director of TVE, Santiago González, and the director of the TVE Film Area, Eva Cebrián, have offered the figures and have detailed some of the projects that are being prepared.
The director of TVE, Santiago González, has begun the assessment by pointing out that "91% of Spanish cinema broadcast on television has been seen through our channels. The commitment to the audiovisual industry is firm and the level of demand for us to participate with public television funds has also increased in recent months. It is difficult to rule out our participation in as many projects as are presented. Our criteria are based on professionalism and the search for the best product and so that they have an impact on the growth of the audiovisual industry. and cinematic.”
González added that now they are trying to “also support animation, television films and documentaries because only balanced growth offers guarantees of improvement to the sector.” The director of TVE has also assured that "the commitment to the co-official languages remains in place and is demonstrated in the approved projects. With some communities or regional television stations the results of the established collaboration are evident. Although our intention is to always try to participate, the quality, viability and future of each project must prevail in the selection."
Eva Cebrián, director of the Film Area, also participated in the conference, indicating that "in our commitment to culture and the investment obligation, each year TVE develops an action plan with the aim of strengthening the industry, supporting creativity and giving it the greatest visibility, with the determination to participate in the greatest possible number of quality films."
The director of TVE's Film Area has highlighted "TVE's conviction that regular broadcasting on television leads to the appreciation and consumption of films made in our country."
Pedro Pérez, president of FAPAE, has stressed that "in a year of great uncertainties for cinema, the collaboration between TVE and our industry has allowed us to maintain an acceptable level of production and growth in the results of our films, gaining screen share in cinemas and audiences in homes."
41 feature films
Among the projects in which TVE will participate, titles such as 'Murder weekend', by Daniel Monzón, stand out; ‘Everything is silence’, by José Luis Cuerda; 'Invader', by Daniel Calparsoro; 'Don't cry, fly', by Claudia Llosa; 'Rec Genesis', by Paco Plaza; 'Second Origin', by Bigas Luna; or 'Atraco', by Eduard Cortés. Other titles join the list, such as 'Grupo 7', by Alberto Rodríguez; 'The cold skin', by Xavier Gens; 'Operation E', by Miguel Courtois; 'We all have a plan', by Ana Piterbarg; 'Villa', by Pablo Trapero; 'Zipi and Zape and the Marble Club', by Oskar Santos; 'Dream and Silence', by Jaime Rosales; 'The bewilderment', by Mar Coll; 'Scorpion in love', by Santiago Zannou; and 'Orange Honey', by Imanol Uribe.
The features include films that meet all the public service criteria that TVE pursues, including the promotion of Spanish co-official languages. In this section, the public channel participates this year in 7 titles: 'El Desconcert', 'Gracia y yo', 'La Gente del Bosc', 'The Three Twins and the Machine of the World', 'Second Origin', and 'Dream and Silence', in Catalan; as well as 'Urte berri on amona', in Basque. Last year, there were six films in other co-official languages financed by TVE: four titles in Catalan -'En el foso', 'Animals', 'La mosquitera' and 'Mil cretinos'- and two in Galician -'Little Galicia' and 'O Apostolo'-. In the 2009 season, 'Pa negre' was financed, filmed in Catalan, which won nine Goya awards and is shortlisted for the Oscars. The same season corresponds to 'The Dragon Hunter', in Basque.
38 documentaries
TVE has approved its participation in 38 documentary film projects for television. Among the titles are 'How to Control the World', in co-production with the BBC; 'Between teachers', 'One day I saw 10,000 elephants', 'Silvio Rodríguez, ojalá', and 'The force of Babel', new work by the producers of the award-winning 'Buy, throw, buy', chosen this year as best documentary by the Television Academy. TVE also participates in 'Mugaritz B.S.O' and 'Cuaderno de Barro', both present in this edition of the San Sebastián Festival.
8 movies for television
Within the production of television films, TVE is committed to historical and biographical formats. In this section, 'A letter for Evita', directed by Agustí Villaronga, stands out. The director of 'Pa negre', a film participated by TVE, is responsible for this project, in which the protagonist will be Nora Navas, awarded the Goya for best actress in 2011, and which will also feature the participation of Carmen Maura, Juan Echanove and Ana Torrent. Filming of this miniseries, in co-production with TV3, begins next November.
TVE is also preparing 'Volveremos', the story of a group of people who, at the end of the Civil War, cross the French border. Prisoners in Argelès, they manage to escape and join the Resistance, becoming part of 'la Nueve', a company of Spanish soldiers who fought in World War II. They will enter Paris and reach the 'Eagle's Nest', Hitler's mansion.
Two other TVE bets in this same section are 'The Conspiracy' and 'The Memory of Water'. The first revolves around the military conspiracy led by General Mola that culminated in the uprising of July 18, 1936. It will be produced by Elías Querejeta, directed by Pedro Olea and starring Manuel Morón, Javier Albalá, Silvia Marsó and Álex Angulo, and will also be made in co-production with ETB. The second of the aforementioned films, 'The Memory of Water', is set in a spa in the 1920s, inspired by the novel of the same title by Teresa Viejo, and starring Natalia Sánchez and Tamar Novas.
3 animation projects
The public channel is also committed to animation and this year it is participating in two series: 'Clanners', based on the popular characters that serve as the image of the children's and youth channel Clan, and 'Escape Hockey', about a group of kids abducted to the Plutionium Prison Planet, from which they can only escape by winning a galactic hockey tournament. In addition, TVE produces the film 'Desafio Champions', inspired by the video game of the same name, where a group of boys and girls defend the destiny of the Earth playing soccer.
TVE broadcasts more than 90% of Spanish cinema
Once again, TVE is the television that broadcasts the most Spanish cinema. During the last 12 months (September 2010-September 2011), the public channel has offered 274 Spanish films, compared to only 26 offered by private channels: 91.3% of the films broadcast on all national coverage channels have been seen on TVE.
Of the 274 titles broadcast, 153 have been offered on La 1 and 121 on La 2. More than half, 157, have been seen in prime time.
In percentages, more than 41% of the cinema broadcast during the season by La 2 is Spanish, which makes it the network that dedicates the highest percentage to our cinema. Furthermore, this is the network that broadcasts the most movies in prime time, the most important time slot, with a total of 102 Spanish films, followed by La 1, with 55 titles. Compared to this, the rest of the networks broadcast 11 films.
If what is considered the television season (September 2010-June 2011) is taken into account, La 1 and 2 have given 198 Spanish titles, compared to 19 from the private channels. Of the 198 titles, 115 have been broadcast on La 1 and 83 on La 2. More than half, 105, have been seen in prime time.
The determined support for the Spanish film industry has been well received by the public. On La 1, the 'ranking' is headed by the 'TV movie' 'Clara Campoamor', with 2.6 million viewers and a 13.3% share. La 2 has also achieved excellent records thanks to Spanish cinema programmed in prime time. On this network, the most watched film of the season is 'The Life That Awaits You', with 1,146,000 viewers, followed by 'The Night of the Sunflowers' (1,141,000).
TVE reveals its bet of the season in San Sebastián: 'Isabel'
This Thursday, TVE has revealed within the framework of the San Sebastián Festival its great commitment to fiction this season.
Produced by Diagonal TV and directed by Jordi Frade, the new La 1 series will tell the story of Isabel la Católica, a fascinating character. Michelle Jenner and Rodolfo Sancho will play the Catholic Monarchs in this series.
The director of TVE, Santiago González, has highlighted that this is "a firm and committed commitment to fiction series made in our country and full of quality. I want to congratulate the entire Diagonal team because they have done a good job with a lot of effort. We have loved the idea for months and the result lives up to what we expected. We also hope that the public likes it a lot."
For his part, Jaume Banacolocha, producer of Diagonal Tv, thanked TVE for the opportunity to be able to explain "an exciting story at a vital moment in this country such as Isabel's story. We have put a lot of love and affection into it."
